The Appeal

The W124 version of the 280 TE is everything you would want in a modern classic Mercedes. Distinctive styling, a deep red 80’s interior, exceptional build quality and the fantastic 2.8l six-cylinder engine. The 280 TE is a fantastic car, with the qualities that made it such a success for Mercedes at the time now also making for an excellent classic car experience.

The six-cylinder engine offers plenty of power and the quality automatic box from Mercedes makes for an easygoing and relaxed drive. The deep red interior has a very classic 80’s feel to it, but with the usual Mercedes-Benz refinements and exceptional build quality. On top of a great engine and interior, the 280 TE also makes for a very practical classic, the boot is prodigious in its proportions and there are an additional two fold out seats within.

With its superb driving experience, comfortable interior and unbeatable carrying capacity the 280 TE really is the ultimate modern classic Mercedes.

Finished in red with walnut trim and plenty of late 80’s/early 90’s style the interior of the 280 TE is everything you would expect from a Mercedes of this age. The exceptional build quality of the interior shows through in every stitch, switch, dial and piece of trim and the overall presentation of the interior is very good.

There is a tear on the drivers seat bolster that can be seen in the images and a part of the metal trim strip on the drivers side sill has begun to lift, otherwise this car shows few signs of wear for its age and mileage.

The W124 series of Mercedes is perhaps the iconic of all of the shapes, eventually developing into today's E-Class the W124 was at home as an executives motorway cruiser, or the in-country car of diplomats (well maybe not the estate!) and was a staple high-end car in films of the day.

This 280 TE is finished in silver with original Mercedes alloy wheels. The paintwork is in very good overall condition and doesn’t reflect the age or mileage of the car. Some of the plastic trim has faded and one of the wing mirrors has some small chips on the front, however these don’t detract from the very good impression this car makes as a whole. All of the light lenses, windows and chrome are all in very good condition and three of the four wheels are also very good, with the fourth showing some light scuffing to the rim.

It’s easy to see from the condition of the car inside and out that it has been well cared for throughout its life. The 2.8l six-cylinder engine springs to life with a turn of the key and idles very smoothly as you would expect with an inline six from Mercedes. The owner reports that the car pulls well with the automatic gearbox changing smoothly and the brakes offering plenty of stopping power. Both the engine bay and the underside present well again highlighting the care that has been taken with this car.

Summary

This 280 TE is a fantastic car; a great engine, coupled with exceptional build quality and a well appointed interior it’s the kind of easy to own modern classic that we love. With MOT it’s ready to drive and the large boot with the optional fold out seats also make it an exceptionally practical car.
