The Appeal
This charming, original-looking 1965 Volkswagen 1200 ‘Beetle’ was brought to the UK in 2018 following a full restoration in Sri Lanka. Beneath its original-looking exterior – complete with earlier-type front lights, front air vents and smaller rear lights – are a host of features that enhance comfort and driveability.
The exterior is finished in period-correct PPG-system light blue and features cream and white wheels with stainless steel hub caps, and stainless steel bumpers with overriders. The chassis and the inside of the fuel tank have been rust-protected with POR-15, and soundproofing has been applied to the roof, floor and engine bay.
The cabin has been fitted with a full interior by TMI, including beige and white seats and door cards, new roof liner and fully custom-made carpeting, including front bonnet. The original Volkswagen 6V radio is present for display only, with a Pioneer DAB sound system including Bluetooth hands-free in the glovebox. The front seats and outer rear seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts. The rear seats also feature ISOFIX anchor points. The glovebox also houses the screen for the reversing camera, which is subtly positioned next to the rear number plate light. A reversing light is also fitted, activated with a switch on the gearbox.
Mechanical upgrades include electric power steering, disc brakes on all four wheels, and front axle beam adjustors. When the engine was rebuilt it was fitted with new pistons and valves, and an upgraded oil pump with oil filter. It also features an upgraded 55A alternator, 12V conversion with 12V flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, and electronic distributor with vacuum advance.
The seller states that the car has been stored in a locked garage since being imported to the UK. A ‘birth certificate’ from Volkswagen confirms that it retains its original chassis and matching 1.2-litre engine.
Described by the seller as being ”a delight to drive”, this thoughtfully updated classic Beetle is sure to put a smile on the face to whoever owns, drives or travels in it.
