The Appeal
Introduced in the early 1980s, the Land Rover Ninety marked an important step in the evolution of the marque's long-running utility 4x4. Retaining the familiar aluminium bodywork and unmistakably functional styling of its Series predecessors, it brought coil-spring suspension and a more modern interior, creating the basic formula that would continue when the Defender name was adopted in 1990.
This 1987 example has been comprehensively restored inside and out, with the seller describing both its exterior presentation and mechanical condition in particularly strong terms. The cabin has also been renewed, giving the vehicle a significantly fresher appearance while retaining the straightforward, purposeful character associated with these early Ninety models.
Service history is available from 2016 onwards, while the seller advises that numerous new components have been fitted as part of the restoration and subsequent maintenance. With the work now completed and the vehicle described as being in excellent mechanical order, it appears ready to be used and enjoyed rather than treated as an ongoing project.
That usability is a large part of its appeal. The Ninety retains the familiar compact proportions and rugged simplicity that helped establish this generation of Land Rover as such an enduring favourite, while its early pre-Defender identity gives it a character all its own. For an enthusiast seeking a smart, short-wheelbase example, it makes a particularly attractive proposition.
