The Appeal

The E30 M3 surprised everyone, including BMW. Needing to sell 5,000, Munich went on to shift 18,000 units, spawning an array of body kits and lesser go-faster 3-Series models. Audi was equally caught off guard. Despite the success of the ur Quattro, the firm’s E30 rival, the 80, had no obvious sporting variant with which to meet BMW head-on.

Hence this car. As the 80s turned into the 90s, Audi UK commissioned Kempton VAG tuning and customising specialist to create two B3-based high-performance cars, a coupe and this Titan silver Quattro saloon. ABT bolted a turbocharger to its 16V 2L engine, virtually doubling power from 137bhp to 260bhp, and sharpened up the suspension to match, notably with Bilstein shock absorbers and a lower ride height. The looks were lightly tweaked with an ABT body kit, five-spoke alloys and bonnet vents. To test out this exploratory idea, the cars were toured around Audi dealers. Evidently they didn’t get it, because these were the only two cars ever built.

For Audi enthusiasts, therefore, this really is something quite special. The car has covered just 52,000 miles from new and presents extremely well. All the ABT add-ons remain inside and out. The cabin features grey fabric Quattro sports seats and, with its lack of wear, supports the low mileage.

The car comes with contemporary magazine articles covering its story and specifications, plus a printout of the ABT modifications. It also comes with the added reassurance of a long MOT with no advisories. A seriously exciting prospect for Quattro fans.
