The Appeal
RAM’s 427SC replica so impressed Cobra guru Carroll Shelby that he endorsed it, noting how closely it followed the look and ethos of his iconic original. But perhaps that is unnecessary, because just looking at the photos of this stand out Candy Apple Red 1999 car shows just how well it channels the drama of those originals.
The car was commissioned by Cobra Services and it’s clear that they set a very high bar. Built using RAM’s Le Mans fastback body with a removable hardtop on Jaguar running gear, it is a highly detailed car fitted with a reconditioned 350bhp 5.8L Chevy V8 beneath its snout. The motor is mated to a tough T5 5spd manual box and the specs include adjustable Spax shocks. The car has covered little more than 8,000 miles since first being UK registered in 2000.
The condition is as impressive as the detailing. The paintwork, with its classic racing stripes, shows few signs of use and the quality cream leather interior is in good order. The attention to detail is impressive, notably the interior with its Smiths dials and trimmed carpets and the Hallibrand wheels with their white-lettered Goodyear Eagles.
Mechanically, the car has benefited from recent attention, including a new water pump and air filter, and the vendor reports that it starts and runs very well. New soundproofing and carpets have been fitted in both footwells, and gas struts have been added for the boot lid. With MOT valid to August 2027, and service records accompanying the sale, this is a well-presented Cobra, ready to be enjoyed.
