The Appeal
Introduced in 1999, the third generation of the Toyota MR2 returned the model to its original concept of a small, economical yet sporty car. The car retained the key feature that gave it its name – a transverse mid-mounted four-cylinder engine – while becoming smaller and lighter, and gaining a full convertible roof.
This 2001 model is probably one of the most original and best cared-for examples of the MR2 available. It has covered less than 24,000 miles, and comes with an extensive service history, including at authorised Toyota dealers until 2013. After that time, it was serviced less regularly, due to being little used. It was professionally serviced in August 2025 and again in May 2026.
The car was owned by the same family for 20 years, during which time it was almost always kept in a garage. From 2014 on, it was reportedly only driven in the summer, and SORN for the winter months.
The entire car presents exceptionally well, with its Astral Black exterior and red leather seats free of obvious flaws and wear. The car comes with a factory hardtop, complete with stand, and was specified with a range of factory options and official Toyota accessories when new.
A Toyota MR2 in this condition, and with such a desirable specification, does not become available very often. Its diminutive size and Toyota reliability are the icing on the cake for this ‘modern classic’, which is sure to make its new owner very happy, whether on the move or stationary.

✓ We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do, and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status, and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
