The Appeal

Introduced in 1973, the 2.8 RSR was a factory-built Racer based on the 911 chassis. These weren't conversions, though - they were purpose-built competition models designed and built to conquer the track; a true dyed-in-the-wool, thoroughbred competition car.

Today, the Porsche 911 RSR is one of the most revered silhouettes in motorsport history, and well-executed tributes offer an accessible route to experiencing that raw, lightweight character without risking one of the incredibly scarce original cars. This particular example, built on a 1969 chassis and finished in Blood Orange, combines a fibreglass RSR body (with steel roof retained) and a comprehensively rebuilt mechanical package to create a road-legal lightweight suited to spirited road driving and track days alike.
At its heart sits a 3.6-litre 964 engine rebuilt by Porsche Classic Center Son with just 6,000 km covered since completion, running the stock Motronic ECU and fuel injection system. Power is fed through a rebuilt 915 transmission fitted with a short shift kit, all-new bushings, and a fresh clutch. The conversion has been approved and noted in the Norwegian vehicle registration, and a copy of the California title accompanies the car. If you're looking for a purposeful, lightweight 911 RSR tribute that's begging for the circuit, this impeccable car warrants serious consideration.

The vendor adds:
"Although a capable track car, it is just as happy on the road, and recently returned from a 2000km european road trip."

  • Braid 9" and 11" RSR Fuchs wheels with Michelin TB5 road-legal tyres
The vendor adds: "The interior retains full carpets to add a degree of comfort and usability rather than a stripped-out, full-on race RS-style adjustable seats; chosen both for correctness and comfort versus a more performance-oriented fixed bucket seat. [The car also features] removable side protector bars or full front cage for a more daily driver experience. "
Refitted upon a 1969 example of the Porsche 911, this examples RSR style focuses on reinvigorating the legendary car's character to suit the exclusive, sports-focused nameplate. From top to bottom, it's been rebuilt and refinished to create a fantastic recreation of the legendary sports vehicle.

While the steel roof has been retained, the rest of the body makes use of lightweight Fibreglass, which has then been finished in the scarcely-seen Blutorange (Blood Orange) from the period's Porsche colour palette. As you'd expect from a car that has covered a respectably low 30,000km since the work, it's clean and well-presented with all of that sporty persona you'd expect.

Internally, the car boasts a stripped-back, lightweight cabin that's fitted with a bolt-on roll cage and removable side bars, while the lightweight seats and racing cut-offs are all present and correct. It's deeply evocative and with performance to match!

The Mechanics

  • Front strut brace
  • Aluminium rear trailing arms with adjustable sway bars
  • Bilstein Race shocks
The vendor adds: "Rather than a highly strung, performance-built motor, a stock M64 engine was added for usability, reliability and ease of maintenance."
It's clear that this car has been specc'd out and designed with the driver in mind. From top to bottom, this thoroughbred acts the part, with a rebuilt transmission, a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder taken from the ever-popular, ever-enduring Porsche 964. We're told that it's running as it should, with a soundtrack befitting the RSR's visceral personality.

Further fitted out with components from the Porsche 915, 930 and 964, it's a remarkable build, and we've little doubt that the car's lucky new owner will find it an impressive beast on the track.
