The BJ40 was built to be unburstable, which is why you see them wherever the road ends and tough landscapes begin. This hard survivor is a case in point - it’s a 1980 3L diesel that spent its life in the harsh Australian sun before arriving in the UK in 2019, and it wears its life proudly on its paintwork. 

If you want a show queen, look elsewhere. This low-mileage SWB BJ40 is all about a life lived and its honest, transparent condition. You could restore it, but perhaps it’s san-dappled demeanour is what it’s really about. 

The vendor acquired it in Australia in 2018 and registered it in the UK in 2019. It shows a low mileage of 09,000 km (67,700 miles), which we’re told is correct although it is not warranted. It is said to start first time, although any classic Land Cruiser aficionado already knows it would. There are also said to be no leaks. 

It may not be glossy and shiny, but this 46-year-old BJ40 would be the talking point of any show. It’s one for the enthusiast who values the history and heritage of these brilliant 4x4s.
