Description
The Morris Minor was produced from 1948 until 1971. Side-valve engines were followed by OHV engines, first 803, then 948 and finally 1100cc. Early cars are known as series MM cars, “Low-light” models were followed by “High-light” until 1953 when the series 2 cars came along.
This car is a “High-light” short bonnet car, a model produced for less than a year and it is likely that there are less than 10 of these models left on UK roads. It was subject to a comprehensive re-fit 10 years ago – the body was restored and re-painted with four new steel wings, the interior was re-trimmed and the original 803cc engine was replaced with a 1098cc unit and matching “ribbed-case” gearbox. Since then it has been treated to further rounds of spending – too much to list here but looking round the car just about every part has been replaced or re-furbished and there are various upgrades including chrome headlamp peaks, spin-off oil filter, “banded” wheels with 165 tyres, in-line unleaded conversion, battery cut-out switch, additional temp gauge, ammeter and fully working trafficators with flashing bulbs.
On the road this Minor drives beautifully – the engine is in fine condition with no smoke and strong oil pressure and a healthy rasp from the (new) exhaust system. This is not a concours car – there are one or two minor paint imperfections (see additional photos) but it presents beautifully with a good quality paint finish and excellent chrome – much of which is new. The boot area also presents well and a great deal of care has been taken under the bonnet to create its pleasing appearance.
This Minor is a very rare car indeed and although it may not please the purists it makes for a very practical car and it’s hard to believe that it is nearly 70 years old when you are behind the wheel. The last upgraded MM we owned sold for £10k and this one is not radically different but it is clearly excellent value !
