The Appeal

There are few cars that stand out as much on British roads as the big pre 60’s American cars. With long sweeping lines, enough chrome to make a Harley Davidson jealous and the high-sided whitewall tyres, the Pontiac Silver Streak makes quite the first impression. But the big Pontiac’s appeal goes much deeper than its standout looks; the meaty 4.4l straight-eight Silver Streak engine is simply fantastic and the interior is classic Americana through and through.

This Silver Streak has a patina throughout that we think perfectly suits the style and age of the car. It would of course be easy enough to keep making improvements, always aiming for perfection, but we think that once you slide behind the wheel and fire up that big straight-eight, all you’ll want to do is cruise down the coast chasing the sunset.

All of the painted parts of the interior, such as the dashboard, have a heavy patina

Headlining presents very well with no drooping or sagging

Extensive brightwork all shows some level of patina, but still looks superb

Shut-lines look good all round
All four wheels present very well complete with chrome centre caps

The Mechanics

Starts easily and idles smoothly
Superb 4395cc straight-eight engine
“Three on the tree” shift pattern with the vendor reporting that all gears engage well
Sounds fantastic with no unwanted noises
The vendor informs us that it is kept undercover with a dehumidifier inside it
Engine bay presents well with the familiar patina found elsewhere on the car
The underside is clean and tidy and presents very well overall for a car of this age
The vendor reports that the car drives exactly as it should, accelerating well, shifting smoothly and stopping quickly (for a 1949 Pontiac!)
Speedo has been disconnected due to being noisy
Horn doesn’t currently work

Summary

Finished in Sage Green and with a respectable patina this Pontiac Silver Streak is a fantastic looking car that attracts attention wherever it goes. With a beautiful straight-eight engine, a “three on the tree” manual gearbox and that huge, open interior, driving the Silver Streak is an experience no European car can match.
