1966 Triumph TR4A IRS

Highlights

• Body off restoration
• Chassis blasted & powder coated
• Minilite replica wheels
• New hood
• Unleaded head conversion

The background

The TR4 comes from a long line of sports cars produced by the Triumph factory.
Starting out in 1952 with the TR20 prototype, this was commonly known as the TR1 and only one was produced. Thereby followed the TR2, TR3, TR4, TR5 , TR6 and eventually finishing in 1981 with the TR8.
The TR4A first built in 1965, was an evolution of the TR4 with the biggest difference being the independent rear suspension or IRS for short which aimed to improve ride quality.
They were built from 1965 to 1967 with some 40,000 being released to the public worldwide.
Popular with motorsports enthusiasts, the TR4A went on to achieve great sporting success in many forms of racing & rallying.

The History

First registered on the 18th of May 1966, this Triumph would appear to have been supplied to a Northwest London customer, judging by the registration number.
Unfortunately though, nothing though is known of this TRs story until 1984 when it was acquired by a Mr Rapier of Darlington.
Whether he actually drove the car we’ll never know, but the vendor purchased it stripped down to a rolling chassis with the body off, and boxes of bits in 1994.
Then ensued a restoration which eventually took 16 years to complete with the TR being put back on the road in 2011.
Used little since the restoration was completed and only on dry days with the roof down, he now feels that it’s now time for their paths to separate as it just doesn’t get used.

Paperwork

There is a current V5c in the owners name & despite not needing one, there is a current Mot certificate with only 1 small advisory ( track rod end boot split ) ,which runs out in June ’22.
Most receipts for the restoration work will come with the car, along with a cd containing photos of the restoration work undertaken.

The Interior

The inside of this TR4 is impressive.

Finished with Biscuit brown leather seats, matching carpets and matching vinyl roof tidy it is very hard to find fault.
All of the upholstery is new, bought from The TR Shop in London and fitted to a high standard.

The wood trim on the door tops and dash are all in excellent condition, as are the black faced Jaeger dials fitted snugly in place.
There is of course a beautiful wood rimmed steering wheel finishing of the cabin nicely.
There really is nothing that needs doing here or will need doing for years to come.

The Exterior

British Racing Green, what other colour could you possibly want on a classic British sportscar, and those Minilite replica wheels look superb.
With just about all panels replaced during its rebuild; the paintwork is in excellent condition.

The bonnet & boot were retained but most other panels were beyond repair. Time was taken over panel fit and the gaps, as can be seen from the photos are very good, possibly better than when they came out of the Coventry factory.
All brightwork was either replaced of re-finished and too is in excellent condition.
The hood was new at restoration and is finished with a hint of dark green to complement the shining bodywork.

The Mechanics

The chassis was stripped back to bare metal and then powder coated. Axles were stripped & rebuilt before again being powder coated.
The engine was stripped, and the bottom end found to be in good condition. The head has been rebuilt using hardened valve seats to aid running on unleaded fuel. The TR4A we have here also has overdrive for those long cruises.
A completely new wiring loom has been fitted, as has a new fuel tank and fuel pump. Other electrics have been refurbished where needed.
Sounding great when being moved for photos, it could maybe benefit from a little time setting up the carbs, but this doesn’t in any way detract from how the engine runs once it’s cleared its throat.

The Appeal

Wind in your hair, British sports car motoring, that’s what you get with a TR4A.
One to drive on that classic car tour of the dales or park up at a classic car show to discuss its merits with admirers.
There’s never been more opportunities to get out there and drive your classic car and a well restored Triumph TR4A could be just the one you’ve promised yourself to participate in.
