The Appeal

Introduced as a revision of the revolutionary DS and ID built back in 1958, the estate car was built on a longer wheelbase than its saloon sibling. It was known by different names depending on the destination market: Break in France; Safari and Estate in the UK; and Wagon in the USA. Familiales such as this one, had a third row of seats which could be folded away, while the standard Break had two side-facing seats in the main load area at the rear.
This particular ID is one which shouldn’t be overlooked, fitted with a semi-automatic gearbox makes this already rare example even rarer. A small handful of these were produced in 1969 limiting their production numbers, and most of which would see themselves in the states, later coming to Europe as a conversion. This is an original European, in completely original form, a real needle in a haystack.

The History and Paperwork

  • 27th of March 1969, the vehicle leaves the factory and is apparently used in France until 1987
  • Exported to Germany in 1987
  • The first known owner, Andreas Schwab, takes ownership of the newly imported ID on the 10th of September 1987, and a ‘Ausnahmegenehmigung’ (proof of import) is issued in his name, noting that the windows are apparently not original.
  • 1993, November 5th, the car gets TUV approval to use 185 wide tyres instead of 180 wide at the front and rear, or 205 front and 185 rear.
  • 1999, November 4th, an old type of registration paperwork called Fahrzeugbrief was issued with the registration DN-FH89H.
  • On the approval you can read that the car has been approved for 8 people, as there have been 7 previous owners before Andreas - the earlier registration reads DU-DS-257.
  • 2000, January 25th, various repairs carried out by KFZ-Teile Schneider, coming to a total of DM 1,949.75, this included a stainless steel exhaust system at DM 1,000.
  • It is here for the first time we see the name of a future owner, Hermann Möller. He purchased the vehicle in 2008, until then, all invoices go in the name of Frank Hoffmann.
  • 2002, February 5th, the TUV report notes minor defects. KM reading is 44,634.
  • 2004, March 31st, the TUV report notes no identifiable issues. KM reading is 55,782.
  • 2006, July 19th, the TUV report notes minor defects. KM reading is 57,396.
  • 2008, May 24th, a purchase contract between the seller, Hoffmann, and the buyer, Hermann Möller, for the price of 12,000 EUR.
  • 2008, June 6th, minor maintenance carried out at Zelder, Citroen specialist. Mileage noted to be 50,000km, which is incorrect.
  • 2009, July 4th, engine repairs carried out worth 1,339.85 EUR.
  • 2009, April 24th, an invoice summary of a major service at a DS Specialist totals 1,069 EUR in materials with 71 hours of labour.
  • 2009, August 25th, minor maintenance carried out at Zelder, mileage noted to be 64,915km.
  • 2015, March 23rd, a purchase contract between Möller and Christian Stöbe.
  • 2022, November 29th, inspection of the vehicle in its dry storage unit.  

The Interior

  • Ochre Yellow upholstery
  • Three ‘strapontins’ (foldable seats) located in the middle of the vehicle
  • Original radio unit present
  • Front seats presented in lovely condition however do show a different shade than the headrests and the rest of the seats.
  • Front carpets present and showing some signs of age and patina as to be expected
  • Original door cards in place with some gentle patina, light damage on the driver side leather where the window winder functions
  • Original single-spoke steering wheel present and in good shape with some signs of use
  • Gauge cluster and dials all function properly, again some light signs of age as to be expected of such an original vehicle
  • Dash panel appears to be free from any damage or cracking
  • Headlining appears to be original, showing signs of age and sagging
  • Central ‘strapontins’ (folding seats) remain functional, some light rusting on the frames however no off-putting damage elsewhere
  • Rear bench in good condition with a small tear on the right side lower cushion.
  • Rear carpets showing signs of age and use
  • Boot area has signs of age, small rips in the right side wall carpet, however the rear of the seats looks to be in great shape.
  • Upholstery parts appears relatively easy to get a hold of
  • Large box of upholstery parts are being sold along with the vehicle for the new owner 

The Exterior 

  • Original grey metallic paint in general good shape, but in need of some TLC
  • Original roof rack present and in wonderful shape
  • Brightwork all original, signs of scratches present and small dents on the front bumper brightwork, there doesn’t seem to be any apparent pitting
  • Headlight glass looks to be in great shape with no damage or cracks, and seemingly no signs of water ingress
  • There is some rusting under the passenger side headlight coming through the paint, a common weak point on these ID’s
  • Window seals starting to show signs of age with light cracks and discolouration, but nothing excessive
  • Rust spots throughout the car's bodywork in common areas as well as scratching, however nothing that would be considered off putting, to be expected from an original car of this age
  • Original wheels appear to be in well kept condition, gentle patina with no notable damage present
  • Rear light clusters are all well presented with no broken or damaged light domes, and all function properly as they should. Surrounding brightwork could do with some attention
  • Light rust and cracks showing through the tailgates paint
  • The split tailgate still functions wonderfully
  • Regardless of the attention required, this is still a beautiful vehicle from all angles, the hints of age and patina show that the vehicle has lived a full life, filled with adventure and character.

The Mechanics 

  • 2,175cc inline-4 cylinder petrol engine
  • 4-speed semi-automatic transmission
  • Front-wheel drive configuration
  • Ample paperwork to prove the historical maintenance of the vehicle has mentioned previously, the car has been well taken care of with no regard to cost throughout its ownerships
  • Hydraulic suspension system reportedly still holds pressure without issue and functions as you would expect it to
  • Steering remains tight and well placed with no unwelcoming clunks or knocks during driving
  • Brakes work well, with no concerning squeals or grinding noises while under pressure
  • The semi-automatic gearbox is reported to work nice and smooth
  • The vehicle starts at the turn of a key, regardless of its long time in storage. A testament to its good maintenance history in its earlier life

Summary

To find an original European ID is a hard task in itself, especially one which retains a good mechanical history. But to find a semi-automatic FH is somewhat of an impossible task these days. 
This would make for a fantastic restoration project to any avid Citroen enthusiast, and thanks to it being a good runner, it could even be used on the daily while improvements are quietly worked on in the background. A real head turner, with ample history!
