Background

The MGB is a classic British sports car manufactured in numbers to cater for the insatiable appetite for open top motoring in the 1960s and 1970s. Built with rugged mechanics and powered by the un-burstable, all-iron BMC B-Series, 1800cc engine, the MGB remains as popular today as it was when first launched.

A rewarding driving experience, excellent parts availability, a lively and welcoming club scene all combine to provide the best value in classic car ownership.

History

First registered in August 1970 this handsome MG was purchased by the seller in July this year.  He has a small collection of cars, but buys and sells frequently to keep the selection interesting!

They are used mainly for weekend trips and shows. He purchased the MG from an elderly gentleman who had owned and cared for it for several years with a Jaguar for company.  He decided that it was time to hang up the string backed gloves so both cars were sold. Having covered some miles during the past summer the seller has a new car on the way so the MGB is being offered for sale.

The Paperwork

There isn’t a great deal of paperwork to accompany the car as what there was went astray before the seller acquired the car.  A quick look at the DVLA history shows MoT history back to 2006 when the MGB had covered 39,200 miles so it may have spent some time off the road as it has covered less than 4,000 miles since.

There is a current MoT which is valid until March 2022, although the seller has offered to put the MG through another test before the buyer collects the car for added peace of mind.

The Interior

The interior is in lovely condition for a car that is just over fifty years old.  The black with red piping colour scheme complements the black exterior.  The seats are clean and have no rips or tears.  The black carpets are similarly clean and show no sign of damp.  The stick-on wood-effect on the dash (common on the majority of these models) is intact and all switches and gauges appear unmarked and correct.

There is a CD/MPS radio fitted which has Aux and USB connectivity, and there are speakers mounted, perhaps a little inelegantly on plywood, under the dash (but at least they are not cut into the door panels!). The glove box door could do with some adjustment; perhaps the hinges are worn, but that maybe that’s being over critical for a car of this age.  The door panels are smart and unmarked and upon inspection the sills appear sound.

The steering wheel is a leather wrapped aftermarket item, but it’s a suitably period design complete with MG badge and suits the car.  Behind the seats there is a concealed isolator switch along with access to the battery and fuel pump.  All in all the interior is a lovely place to be, with a little room for improvement if the new owner so desired.

The boot has new carpets, and there is a matching spare wheel complete with toolkit, hammer, jack and special tool to remove the spoked wheels.

The Exterior

In our opinion black is an excellent and unusual colour for an MGB.  It suits and emphasises the sporting looks of the car and contrasts well with the chrome.

The paintwork has a shine to it with only a couple of minor marks.  There are some small scratches on the bonnet that could possibly polish out, and upon close inspection there are some tiny dimples on the n/side rear quarter panel.  Other than that the paintwork is excellent with a good deep shine.

The glass and light lenses are clear and un-cracked although the side windows have some scratches for being wound up and down over the years.  The chrome is generally good, with the exception of the front bumper which has age related pitting, and some dents in the over riders.  The silver painted spoked wheels are all clean and the shod with nearly new Uniroyal tyres.
The black leather roof is in excellent condition with no rips or holes, and only minor marks from age.  There is also a tonneau cover that will come with the car.

The Mechanics

Under the bonnet all appears to be in order with some evidence of new leads and parts.  The seller says the MG drives exactly as it should with plenty of power, and all the right noises coming from the right places!

The gearbox is easy to use with the correct working overdrive.  He describes the car as “a good solid example that drives really well” which is why he bought it in July.

The Appeal

Whether you are an MG aficionado looking for a low mileage candidate to enjoy, or an excited newcomer to classic car ownership, this MGB is unlikely to disappoint.  With chrome bumpers and spoked wheels it is definitely the model to have.

Having benefitted form 50 years of care, and relatively sparing use, it’s a lovely example.  MGBs are still excellent value, but how long will that continue?
