1974 MGB

Highlights

• Wonderful condition throughout
• Well-documented history
• Restored in 2004, covered ~3,000 miles since

The Background

Following the success of the MGA, in 1962 the British Motor Corporation (BMC) introduced its successor in the form of the MGB, which would remain in production for a staggering number of years, with the final cars not being produced until 1980 under the guise of British Leyland.
Available in numerous body styles, the MGB was available as a two-seater roadster, 2+2 coupé under the MGB moniker, a six-cylinder version dubbed the MGC, and the V8-powered MGB GT V8.
Sales of the MGB and its variants were impressive, with a total of 523,836 cars being produced across all variants. So successful was the MGB, that Rover even marketed what many consider a ‘continuation’ car during the 1990’s in the form of the MG RV8.
Power for the standard MGB roaster as seen here comes from the 1.8-litre BMC B-Series engine, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. An electronically-operated overdrive was available as an option on the MGB, though it is believed that less than 20% of vehicles produced were fitted with this option.

The History

This particularly lovely example was purchased by the vendor in February 2021 from the sixth owner, as part of their ‘self-funding’ car collecting hobby.
Previously restored during 2004 with plenty of receipts present, the vehicle is believed to have only covered around 3,000 miles since the completion of the works, meaning it is in great condition throughout.
During the vendor’s ownership, the car has wanted for nothing outside of general servicing, and has proven to be reliable and useable with no headaches or issues making themselves known.
Interestingly, this is one of the 20% of cars fitted with the Laycock overdrive unit from the factory, with O/D being available on both third and fourth gear, making this a very desirable MGB for those looking to tour the country or cover long distances behind the wheel.

The Paperwork

Included with the vehicle is a wealth of history, including numerous invoices for parts relating to the aforementioned restoration during 2004.
In addition to this, there are also several invoices from the present day, showing new brake fluid being purchased during 2021, refreshed carburettor units in 2014, a significant suspension overhaul in 2015 along with a brake system refresh during the same year.

The Interior

Inside, it is clear that this MGB hasn’t covered too many miles since its restoration, as the cabin presents in outstanding condition.
The dashboard, which is made of plastic with a lovely wood-effect, is free of any signs of cracking, while the carpets are also in excellent condition, as are the seats which only show minor signs of use to the driver’s seat base.
Elsewhere, the wood inlays look to be all in good shape with only some minor marks noted, while the high-traffic areas such as the gear lever and steering wheel are also in great shape, with the vendor noting that the overdrive unit engages and works exactly as it should.
The door cards are also in great shape with very little sign of use, while USB outlets have been installed in the glovebox, allowing modern phone connectivity and charging on-the-go.

The Exterior

Outside, the same story is true - it’s clear that this ‘B’ has been well cherished throughout its history, with the older restoration still holding up very well to this day.
The chrome detailing is in great shape generally, while the wire ‘knock-off’ wheels are free from kerbing or damage, but would likely benefit from a refurbishment to bring them back to their mirror-finish best.
In terms of the paintwork, it presents very well and appears to be largely free from any sort of marks or damage, though there is a patch of bubbling noted on the nearside rear of the folding roof which can be seen in the photographs.
Speaking of the roof, this is a leather example and looks to be very good indeed, with only minor marks and no signs of any cracking or discolouration to the plastic windows.
All of the body panels are nice and straight with no signs of any impact damage, and the panel lines appear to be lovely and even throughout.

The Mechanicals

Underneath, everything looks pretty ship-shape, with no signs of any major issues that we can see.
The usual ‘bloom’ is visible on the exposed components such as the exhaust and various suspension elements, though this is not thought to be of any concern, and the vendor has stated they will happily put a fresh MOT ticket on the vehicle before the sale completes.
Elsewhere, the boot floor looks lovely and solid, as do the floors underneath the carpets in the interior as far as we can see - good news all around then.
The engine bay, too, looks to be in fine fettle, with no reported leaks to speak of.
There are no reported faults or issues with the vehicle, and the vendor has had no mechanical problems during their ownership, making this an instantly-usable example of the classic roadster.

The Appeal

Summer is coming, the sun is shining and beaches are once again open. What’s missing? That’s right, a classic British sports car… Well, we have just the ticket here.
In very good condition throughout with an older - but still great condition - restoration having been carried out, this 1974 MGB Roadster is in rude mechanical health and benefits from the desirable overdrive on the top gears, making it a compelling summer cruiser for the discerning motorist.
With its classic looks, raspy engine note and analogue driving characteristics, there are few better cars to enjoy a lovely summer’s evening behind the wheel of. Go on, you know you want to…
