The Appeal
The XJC was a two-door coupé version of Jaguar’s successful XJ. Initially announced to the public in 1973, economic instability delayed its production until 1975. It would only be produced for a few years, until it was withdrawn in 1978, which ensured that few were sold and they are now a rare sight.
This particular XJC was sold new in the UK, restored in the ‘90s, then exported to Belgium, where it is said to have had only one owner since it arrived in 2009. Now offered for sale in good all round condition this car would make a great daily driver to waft around in, offering the best of ‘70s British luxury.
It only requires a little fettling, such as a service to the rear brakes, then it will be ready to be used and enjoyed as it deserves.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered on 4th April 1978
- Sold new in the UK by Henley’s of London
- Said to have been restored between 1993 and ’97
- Some photographs of the restoration will come with the car
- Exported to Belgium in 2009
- Said to have had only one owner in Belgium from 2009 to 2022
- MOT certificates from 1985 to 2009 reportedly on file
- Original service book said to be showing plenty of stamps
- The dials have been converted to kilometres, but the odometer is believed to still read in miles

The Interior
- The black leather interior is in good condition for its age
- Some creasing to the leather seat covers
- The rear backrest is showing signs of UV damage
- Carpets clean and tidy throughout
- Excellent polished veneer dashboard
- Modern Alpine radio/CD player fitted
- Glovebox with fold-up vanity mirror
- All the switches, buttons, electric windows and aerial are said to work without fault
- Air conditioning fitted
- Full Jaguar tool kit, including spanners, bulbs, spark plug socket, pliers and screwdriver
- The headlining is coming detached in places
The Exterior
- We’re told that when the car was restored in the ‘90s, it had new metal welded in and corrosion removed
- It also reportedly underwent a full respray at this time
- The bodywork remains in good condition
- The paint is also good, but has of course picked up a few scratches and blemishes in the intervening decades
- The underside looks good, there is a repair patch on the driver’s side
- The vendor reports that there are two patches of corrosion in the front wheel arch
- Wax treatment was applied during the restoration
- The Falken tyres are said to be in excellent condition
The Mechanics
- 4.2-litre straight-six Jaguar XJ engine
- Automatic transmission
- Said to start readily and drive well
- The rear brakes are in need of attention, with a small leak present
- The front brakes are believed to have been recently renewed
- Two new petrol pumps and a battery fitted this year
- No significant leaks reported, just some small drops from the gearbox
- The engine bay looks clean and tidy
Summary
This XJC has clearly been well cared for over the years, benefitting from a thorough restoration in the 1990s before being exported to Belgium in 2009. The paint is in good condition for its age and the interior still has that warm lived-in glow that can only be built up over time.
