THE HISTORY
There are few cars that have been a staple of the automotive landscape for over half a century, however the Mercedes SL is one of the exceptions to the rule – and for good reason. The R107 SL symbolised quality, luxury and quality engineering, all points that are backed up by the fact that it remained in production for 18 years.
This sleek Merc was delivered new on the 1st August 1980 and has been cruising European roads since, with some tasteful upgrades along the way.
THE INTERIOR
‘They just don’t build them like they used to’ is a phrase that’s bandied around a lot, yet couldn’t be more true of the R107. Sit upon the driver’s seat of this Mercedes and you’ll be instantly reminded of what true comfort really means.
Classic car specialists Woodham Mortimer have undertaken a recent re-upholstery of the car, resulting in an extremely special cabin and full peace of mind knowing that it’ll be ready to transport you in style and sheer comfort. All the buttons work on the dash as they should as does the tastefully upgraded Caliber DAB radio, and the electric windows both work too.
THE EXTERIOR
Whilst there are a few age-related marks, the exterior is in remarkable condition for a 40-year-old car, again a testament to the superb build quality of Mercedes of this era.
All lights work as they should, and the roof is able to be taken down and re-applied with no issues to which there are no tears in the material.
THE MECHANICS
Whilst this SL started out life as a 350, a previous owner had decided that a larger V8 would be more appropriate and consequently a 4.5 litre lump from an SL 450 was sourced and now resides up-front. This larger displacement is reflected within the DVLA data, and rumbles into life with a turn of the key. The gearbox works as it should and there are no mechanical concerns to note.
Whilst there’s limited documentation around this conversion, we will be able to facilitate any questions should you have any.
THE APPEAL
Well-engineered, uncomplicated cars that are a dream to drive everyday are few and far between, yet this Mercedes SL still very much fits the bill.
With thousands previously spent on the upkeep, a recently re-upholstered interior and a thumping V8 upfront – it’s hard to see how top-down driving can get much better and one that will seriously enhance any road trip, whether it be a trip to the shops or a gallop across the continent.
