The Appeal
The W126 S-Class is widely regarded as one of Mercedes-Benz's finest engineering achievements, representing the pinnacle of 1980s luxury motoring with its timeless Bruno Sacco design. This particular 380SE is a South African-built example, which Mercedes engineers in Stuttgart reportedly considered superior in build quality and finish compared to their German-built counterparts. The South African models benefited from locally sourced leather hides and wool for the seats and carpets, enhancing their already impressive quality.
This 1983 example presents in smart condition for its age, having covered just 108,000 km with a single mature owner - a winemaker from Wellington in the Cape Winelands. The car appears well-preserved, having spent its life in the "Boland" region, far enough from coastal moisture to avoid the corrosion issues that often plague these vehicles. Recently, the car has received comprehensive mechanical attention, including new Bilstein shocks, fuel pump, and various other components to ensure it remains in good operating condition.
