The Appeal

If you’re looking for a car that is economical and unassuming, look away now as this Hummer H1 is anything but…

Based upon the Humvee M998 which was built by AM General as a military vehicle, the Hummer H1 was developed for the civilian market and early adopters included actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Finished in gloss black on the outside, this 1996 H1 boasts more plush interior appointments than you might expect and is a great antidote to the modern SUV. This is the only Hummer in the Netherlands registered under 3500 kg with a gasoline engine (5,7L Gasoline instead of the ‘standard’ 6,2L Diesel).

TV’s Jeremy Clarkson once remarked that the H1’s four seats were spaced so far apart they were in different time zones! There’s certainly a lot of room in a Hummer and passengers won’t be competing for space.

Owing to intrusion from the engine, the centre console is simply enormous but still manages to incorporate cup holders - a must in any American car, regardless of size.

Given that it is based upon a military vehicle, what surprised us is that the Hummer is more luxuriously trimmed than we had imagined. The tan upholstery is a nice touch and the black seats are a practical choice. There is very little wear, partly because these vehicles are so hard wearing and also owing to the fact that this Hummer has covered few miles in its lifetime.

Even in the United states where cars are generally very large, the Hummer H1 towers over just about everything. Measuring over 15 feet long and over 7 feet wide, the H1 is simply enormous.

Finished in gloss black, this example has a very strong presence and cannot fail to be noticed. We couldn't see any damage to the bodywork or underside, suggesting that while these vehicles are capable off-roaders, this Hummer has mostly remained on tarmac.

The Mechanics

The vendor informs us that the Hummer drives well with nothing untoward to report. The 5.7-litre small block V8 is used in a plethora of vehicles and so servicing is not too specialised either.

Designed to run in ruts left by tanks, the Hummer has a very wide track, which makes it capable in any off-road situation.

Summary

Nothing quite grabs your attention quite like a Hummer. With so many craving an elevated driving position and the safety of a large 4x4 these days, you can't take that idea much further than buying an H1
