38 DCN Carburettors - Ferrari V12

The Parts

Parts for classic Ferraris are not the most readily available, so it’s with great pleasure we bring this stunning brace of DNC carburettors to auction. Designed for use with the V12 fitted to the Testarossa, 250 GTO and LM, they are not only a crucial mechanical part of these machines, but also a key visual element for what many would describe as wheeled works of art.
These carburettors were built by Ferrari experts Roelofs Engineering in Holland as a copy of the original Weber 38 DCN carburettors, which were fitted on the 250 GTO, Testarossa and LM.
The current owner, a major Ferrari collector looking to offer some of their collection back into the enthusiast and specialist market, bought the set together with some cam covers (not included) in RM London sale in 2008. The owner of a number of classic Italians, the logic was simple in that they would be a wise part to have in stock for the future. However, twelve years on they have still yet to be utilised, having been in storage since they were purchased. Given their rarity and the fact they could well be the key part missing from someone else’s project, they are now being made available.
They were described in the 2008 auction as: “Six downdraught carburettor recreations of the Weber 38 DCN model by Roelofs in Holland, suitable for most early 1960s Ferrari competition V12 engines, complete with central-vee inlet manifolds and six-point throttle linkage tube. Good condition, unused but with atmospheric corrosion to manifolds and cam covers."
Since then, they have been in dry, warm storage and have been kept protected. The photographs included in this listing are recent, and are representative of their current condition.
Given the rarity of 250 GTOs and SWB cars, original Weber 38 DCN carburettors very rarely come to the market. When they do appear, the prices can be considerable, as evidenced by a Bonhams auction in 2008, in which a set sold for some £25,000. Brand new reproduction carburettors cost £20k.
While not original Ferrari parts, Roelofs of Holland is a known and respected builder of these parts, and as such, they represent an incredible opportunity either for someone who owns one of the applicable cars, or for a business that restores and maintains them. Needing nothing other than setting up, these carburettors are ready to once again be the all-important interface between air, fuel and speed.
