Our MG Midget was built in 1965 and first titled in 1966. Delivered in the classic combination of a British Racing Green body and a black interior, the car remained highly original and well preserved. At some point the Midget was repainted in its original colour, now clearly showing its age. The body is in very solid condition, showing only minor surface rust and no signs of major damage. Some body filler was detected on the right hand sill panel, lower right rear quarter panel and on top of the left front fender. No rust damage or rust repair patches could be found, except for the battery tray area. The grille is from a later type Midget. Factory painted wire wheels.
The interior is in need of renovation. Carpets and soft top are worn, and the seats are from a later type MG Midget. 40. 390 mls on the odometre, believed to be original mileage. Old service stickers can be seen in the door post, though they have faded out. A good vinyl tonneau cover and bag are included, as well as an original knock-off hammer for the wire wheels and a jack.
After years of hibernation, we changed the engine oil, drained the fuel tank, replaced some hoses and got the car running. The A-series engine runs nicely, with good oil pressure and in absence of smoke or unwanted mechanical noise. We assume the car still has the original power unit, although the engine number tag is missing.
The MG Midget is driveable, but requires mechanical attention before being considered safely roadworthy. The gearbox feels tight, confirming our suspicion that this is a genuine low-mileage car.
This solid survivor is a great starting point for an easy restoration project.
