When the first Lambrettas appeared in 1947, they were simplicity itself—two wheels, a seat, an engine, some handle-bars, and nothing in the way of styling. That was fine for cash-strapped postwar Italians, but rivals Vespa had a stroke of genius; why should a scooter be merely functional if it could be fashionable? The 1955 Vespa GS was a masterpiece of Modernist design, which required a quick response from Lambretta. So, in 1957, Lambretta unveiled the TV175. A world apart from its predecessors, it featured 10in wheels, a 175cc engine (25cc more than the GS) giving 8. 6 or 9hp and a claimed top speed of 64mph, and a new four-speed gearbox. Its curvaceous “Slimstyle” panels were attractive, and it was a hit with Britain’s trendy coffee-bar set.
Early TV175s are rare, the Series I having been replaced by the Series II in 1959. This 1958 model was sold new in Britain, making it one of the first Lambrettas to come to these shores. Even better is the fact that it still retains its RF60 buff logbook, so its early history should be traceable. At some stage, it was taken off the road and placed into storage, leading to its acquisition in 2023 by the vendor, who then embarked upon a meticulous restoration to the highest standard.
