THE BACKGROUND
A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd was a British automobile and motorcycle manufacturer in operation from 1909 to 1931.
Joe Stevens, father of Harry, George, Albert John (‘Jack’), and Joe Stevens Junior, was an engineer who owned the Stevens Screw Company Ltd, in Wednesfield, near Wolverhampton. Stevens had a reputation for quality engineering before the company built its first motorcycle in 1897, using a Mitchell single-cylinder four-stroke imported from the USA A J Stevens & Co competed frequently at the Isle of Man TT with consistent wins and podiums, one of the most famous wins was the 1921 race where Howard R Davies came 1st on his 350cc this first time a 350cc had won a 500cc race.
THE HISTORY
The current owner acquired this motorcycle from his brother who used to ride it up to its sale in 2018.
Since then this motorcycle has stood idle in a garage under cover for most of the time, as it was purchased more as a homage to the manufacture.
THE PAPERWORK
Unfortunately, no paperwork other than the V5c and a couple pieces of artwork are present. No MOT history online.
THE EXTERIOR
This 1927 built AJS is gorgeous, in the flesh it’s quite petite, but also deceivingly heavy! The paintwork is in fine order with only one area that would require attention. There is a deep scuff/scratch on the chain guard by the left roof rest, shown in the pictures it looks like a white mark.
Other than that this vehicle is in fabulous condition for something that is 94 years old. From tank and handle bars to kick stand and mud guard the rest of the bike is in great condition. The seat and leather bag fitted to the right are like new, so are the stickers. The black paint and gold detailing is a lovely combination.
It’s difficult to believe the bike is nearly a 100 years old so it’s most likely had a refurbishment at some point but nothing is available to back this up.
THE MECHANICS
As mentioned, the bike hasn't been started for a while and when moving it out of its home, the garage, it did sound like it needed a little lubricant in some areas.
There’s no paperwork to say anything about previous mechanical work or restoration but the engine looks in great order. Shiny and clean nuts and bolts are everywhere, so again it's obvious work has been carried out but by who and when is unknown.
THE APPEAL
This is a unique bit of motorcycle history with its links to the Isle of Man TT and while the bike doesn't currently run it’s current condition is fantastic and give the new potential owners satisfaction that it shouldn't take much to get it going if that's the desire.
In our opinion this bike is such a gem that it’s almost too good to be used on the roads and should take pride as part of a collection, private or museum. It’s not far off a century old and it’s almost in the same condition as the day it left the factory.
