The Firebird was the last model in Alvis’s “Firebird” range of SA saloons and tourers, which ran from 1934 to the outbreak of World War Two.
Restored into its original colour scheme, this one is a truly lovely example of the breed, made rare by the fact it has a Cross & Ellis touring body, one of only 25 nown to have been made and a handful known to still survive.
Currently forming part of a private collection, the car has been stored for several years but is presented in exceptional visual condition and is in full running order.
It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a car with stunning styling and in excellent restored order.
During its restoration, the Alvis was fully retrimmed and is in excellent internal condition, with smart sage green carpets and seat backs and rich green leather seat facings.
The ornate wooden dash is a thing of beauty, with a sporty six-dial layout, while the cabin is dominated by the huge steel steering wheel, with advance and retard controls and a push-button floor starter.
You only have to look at this car to see that it’s a high quality restoration, with gorgeous paintwork marred only by a couple of tiny marks that it has acquired during storage.
All of the chrome and fittings are in good, original condition and the canvas roof and weather gear have been recovered and are very well-presented.
The wire wheels are excellent, matched to the body colour, while underneath all seems good and well with a strong chassis and no evidence of major corrosion.
The 1.85-litre OHV Alvis engine was an advanced and dependable unit for its time and was surprisingly punchy for its capacity.
With 54bhp, it’s described as being easily capable of 75mph, while it comes with a four-speed fully synchromesh transmission. It’s said to run very well, with no known problems.
This is a truly lovely car and a fabulous piece of 1930s styling, with a very rare body and restored to a superb standard.
It’s a wonderful addition to any pre-war sports car collection, as well as being a joy to drive and show.
