THE APPEAL
Made in the United Kingdom and sold worldwide, the Austin Seven was even sold to other manufacturers such as BMW and Nissan, who used the car under licence for their own take on the famous Austin Seven.
If you want to step into the world of 1930s motoring, then this 1938 Austin Big Seven is the perfect car to do just that. It has been given an in-depth restoration inside and out, leaving it in the stunning condition you see here today.
The car is in excellent order and wants for nothing apart from the odd run out here and there, which you will enjoy immensely.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Registered 14th May 1938
- Two previous keepers
- MOT valid until 23rd June 2023
- Owners handbook included
- Selection of photographs taken during the restoration
The vendor has owned the Austin Seven for two years. The previous keeper started a complete restoration approximately four years ago and finished it 12 months before the vendor bought it.
Used for days out and vintage rallies, the Austin has been thoroughly enjoyed by the vendor; the only reason for the sale is his wife struggles to get in and out of the car, which now prevents them from enjoying days out together.
There are a nice collection of photographs taken during the restoration, showing the body off and completely stripped back. The owner's handbook is present, and the V5 which shows two previous keepers.
THE INTERIOR
- Period correct interior
- Retrimmed interior
- Presents well
- Original steering wheel
Inside the Seven is a nice place to be and is finished very well. The interior has been retrimmed in red leather and is in excellent condition.
The seats are comfortable and show no signs of excessive wear. The rear seat is also in excellent condition and doesn’t look to have been used. The door cards have been finished in leather and are in good order, even down to the pull chain to unlock them.
The dashboard has been painted in a period colour that is free from noticeable chips or scratches. The instruments show some signs of patina in keeping with the age of the vehicle, and the odometer shows a reading of 1,936 miles which is believed to be the number covered since the restoration.
The carpets have also been replaced and are in good condition, with just a few marks picked up from usage. Looking up at the headlining, this fits as it should with no areas sagging. Inside the boot is the spare wheel with a new tyre fitted, and the wheel has been finished to match the rest.

THE EXTERIOR
- Full body off restoration
- Excellent brightwork
- Working Trafficator Semaphores
With a full restoration and finished in red and black, the 1938 Austin Big Seven presents exceptionally well.
Starting at the front, you will notice a set of indicators fitted to the lower edge of the bumper, making it safer for modern day driving. The chrome work is in excellent condition, with no tarnishing to be seen on the bumper, grille or headlights.
The bonnet aligns nicely and opens and closes as it should. Further up, the equivalent of air conditioning for 1938 is the opening front windscreen. This easily opens as it should, the chrome frame is in good order, and there are no scratches to mention on the windscreen.
Looking down the sides, the shape is fantastic, and the doors align as they should with a nice tight gap around each side. A rare sight on vehicles of this age is working semaphores which flick out and retract as they should.
The windows are in good condition again, with no apparent scratches. The roof once had a sunroof. This has been covered over during the restoration as they had a tendency to leak.
At the rear, the boot lid aligns nicely. The lights' lenses are free from any splits or cracks, and again like the front, there has been a set of indicators fitted to the bumper, which is also in excellent order. The bullet hole to the left of the rear window is a waterslide transfer affixed by the vendor who was the originator of the James Bond bullet holes in 1962.
The wheels have been finished in black to match the arches and finished with a chrome hubcap and are in good condition. The tyres were new at the completion of the restoration and have plenty of miles left.
THE MECHANICS
- 885cc engine
- Four-speed gearbox with synchromesh
- Mechanically overhauled
- Excellent chassis
- Good tyres
The 885cc engine fires up nicely with a little choke and sounds as you would expect.
Looking around and under the car, there didn’t appear to be any leaks at the time of our visit. Recently fitted is a new fuel pump and set of NGK spark plugs to ensure it is running correctly.
On the road, the Austin is capable of happily cruising at 50mph, getting there through the four-speed gearbox, which does have a synchromesh.
The car is reported to come to a stop as you would expect. Looking to the underside, it is also well presented and finished with black stone guard to protect it.
SUMMARY
At 84 years old, the Austin Seven doesn’t have the mod cons of today's vehicles, but do you really need them?
The simple yet effective design is easy to work on, and it does what it says on the tin, don't forget it even has the 1938 version of air conditioning. What more could you ask for?
Get ready to enjoy some classic motoring.
Yes, it may not be the fastest of vehicles, but that just gives people a chance to stare that bit longer as you drive past.
