Provenance and reputation are everything when it comes to classic cars. Look at the Mini, simultaneously darling of Carnaby Street and master of the rally stage. Or the VW Beetle, the original people’s car. Or the Fiat 500, the machine that mobilised post-war Italy.
So what claim does the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 have to pin proudly to its figurative lapel? Well, until that upstart Mini came along, this model was pretty much the most successful car on the rally stage; Sunbeam-Talbots won at the Alpine Rally and the RAC, Stirling Moss drove one on the Monte… you mightn’t think it to look at it, but there’s a whole lot of motorsport provenance wrapped up in this elegant roadster.
Of course, it’s not all snorting rally lunacy; in fact, this car was engineered to be smooth and luxurious, and that’s precisely what it is. Furthermore, this beautifully presented example has an interesting and well-documented past, as evidenced by the history file: with hand-written letters from the 1970s through to service bills in the ’80s, the back-story is all laid bare. And most importantly of all, there’s photographic evidence of a body restoration and repaint, paperwork for a full interior retrim, and oodles of documentation relating to servicing, maintenance and proper mechanical care. Wonderful to behold inside and out (and underneath, if you crouch down to take a peek), it runs superbly and turns heads wherever it goes.

The Interior
Full retrim in 2010
New gauges installed in 2020
The interior of this Sunbeam-Talbot is an extremely pleasant place to be. It was all retrimmed in 2010, and evidently hasn’t seen a huge amount of use since as it all still looks very fresh. The seat upholstery is in lovely condition front and rear, and the carpets are very good too. The doorcards were trimmed as part of the makeover and these are compete and unmarked.
The dash and steering wheel are in super condition, and benefited from a new fuel gauge and speedometer being recently fitted at considerable expense. (The new gauges explain why the mileage displayed is so low; checking the MOT history online shows the mileage to have been around 63,000 before the clocks were renewed.) The windows wind up and down freely front and rear, the glovebox lid latches as it should, and everything appears to be in proper working order. Inside the boot it’s all dry and tidy, with a variety of the correct fluids and filters that it’s handy to carry in such a car.
The Exterior
Excellent soft-top
Quality restoration with lovely paintwork
The restoration work on this car was evidently carried out to an impressively high standard, as it all presents very pleasingly indeed today. The pre-resto photos show that this shade of green isn’t the car’s original, but we’d suggest that it’s a real improvement, as it’s a rich and deep shade that sparkles beautifully in the sun. The panel gaps are consistently good all around, and the doors and boot all close with a pleasing thunk. The window glass is all good, and the soft-top is superb inside and out – it’s in great condition with no marks, tears or wear, is easy enough to stow and reattach, and comes complete with a tasteful tonneau cover that fits perfectly.
All of the correct trim and badging is in place, the light lenses are in good order, and the chrome is all good with no corrosion or pitting. The colour-coded wheels wear the correct hubcaps and have matching radials with plenty of tread (which, interestingly, are of the type worn by black taxi cabs).
The Mechanicals
Very smooth runner
Fresh MOT with no advisories
This generation of Sunbeam-Talbot 90, designated MkIIA, was built from 1952-54, and came equipped with an uprated (over previous models) higher-compression 2,267cc four-cylinder engine boasting a handy 77bhp, as well as bigger brakes and improved brake cooling. The car has enjoyed casual use over the last few years and its owners are keen to sing its praises when it comes to reliability and comfort: the engine is always willing to start, idles evenly (and impressively quietly), and is a nice smooth runner. There are no issues reported with the brakes, steering, transmission or suspension, and this is backed up by having passed its MOT a few days before our photoshoot with no advisories. A mechanically sound example that’s reportedly very pleasant indeed to drive.
Summary
The Sunbeam-Talbot 90 is a bit of a hidden gem in the classic car world, sitting at a markedly lower price point than other mid-1950s tourers – and this is a bit of a mystery, as these really are fabulous cars. Comfortable, attractive, well-appointed, solidly constructed, reassuringly reliable… and with that extra bonus of not many people knowing what it is, so it’s always a conversation-starter.
This really is a great example too; the body resto and paintwork is very well done, the retrimmed interior is lovely, and it’s crying out for some top-down adventures in the glorious British summer time. So what are you waiting for?

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
