The Background

By the early 1960’s, the Innocenti Lambretta brand had already stormed the UK Market and was renowned for being the most innovative motor scooter manufacturer in the world. In 1961, the older rounded designs were losing favour so Innocenti decided to up their game and penned the now legendary Series 3 shape. It used the same basic mechanics as before but a beautifully angled design, evocative of the change in car design from legendary Italian brands style houses such as Pininfarina and Touring.

However, the basic model LI range was not quite stylish enough in Innocenti’s eyes and in 1962 the now legendary Series 3 TV175 was released. This had a slightly different headset and horncast design which again was lightyears ahead of anything else at the time. Later on Innocenti also developed a new set of side panels which are now the most recognisable part of the Lambretta, with an indented flash and a polished alloy “knuckleduster” to accentuate it.

Around 1965, the LI125 Special was released which was the perfect mid way point between the standard specification LI125 and the TV175. It had the same basic mechanics as the LI125, albeit with a larger 20mm Carburettor, close ratio gearbox and a tuned 125cc Cylinder for more get up and go and also featured the same stylish bodywork as the TV175. The model was mainly sold in the Italian market due to their cylinder capacity laws and nearly all of these machines were painted the same light Metallic blue as the later TV175’s.

Today the LI125 Special is a favourite and although original UK market machines are extremely rare, it is one of the most imported machines due to the stylish looks on offer for a more reasonable price than the large capacity models.

The History

Being an imported machine, this particular Lambretta doesn’t have a huge amount of known history, although we can make some fair assumptions given the level of restoration, what the owner has had done to the machine and also the amount of goodies fitted to it.

The machine has obviously benefitted from a restoration (and this appears to have been done in the UK in the last 10 years) at some point in its past and now features a 200cc engine casing with a TS1 Cylinder kit fitted to it.

The vendor bought the machine a few years ago as a bit of fun and has maintained it very well having had the work done by a few well known specialists but has now decided to sell it and invest the money elsewhere.

The Paperwork

As per most Lambrettas; this machine doesn’t come with a huge amount of paperwork apart from a few receipts, a recent dynograph read-out proudly displaying over 20 horsepower from it’s fire breathing TS1 engine and a UK V5C.

The Exterior

Having benefited from a restoration at some point in its recent history, this 125 Special looks fabulous in its attractive two tone Pearlescent paint scheme, which is a tasteful blend of retro meets modern and appears in fantastic condition. The toolbox door and bridge piece are both stainless steel examples which gives a nice bit of bling in the sun without being over the top.

Atop the headset we find a small, modern mirror fitted for safety atop the master cylinder for the retro fitted hydraulic disc brake and looking further down, a 70MPH speedometer has been fitted (presumably so that you don’t have to guess what speed you’re doing looking at a KM/H version when head down into the wind!!).

We love the racing look this machine has with it’s after market slope back seat which is in fabulous condition and it’s little sprint rack fitted above the taillight. There is also a spare wheel carrier fitted inside the leg shields which is useful for long journeys should the inevitable happen and both the kickstart lever and brake light are billet aluminium modern looking versions to compliment the modern “street racer” look.

The Mechanics

Having been subject to a comprehensive rebuild, this Lambretta doesn’t leave a lot to be desired, having had a full engine rebuild on a 200cc Engine Casing which benefitted from a full TS1 engine upgrade. To compliment the TS1 cylinder kit, a 30mm Dell’Orto Flatslide carburettor has been fitted which sits proudly on the kickstart side of the engine. Feeding this carburettor is a large long range fuel tank with a fast flow rear exit fuel tap. The vendor has advised us the engine runs beautifully and fires up within a few kicks.

Please note - from our experience of TS1’d Lambrettas, they are FAST! The kit was developed in the 1980’s as a fast touring engine and properly set up they cruise at motorway speeds for very long distances, so please take this into account that it is not for the faint hearted... Or see this as an opportunity to dare yourself!

The machine also benefits from an Electronic Ignition upgrade with 12v lighting which all works  very well and as stated earlier, a hydraulic front disk setup because with 20hp on tap, you do want to stop it, which it does; well. We also noticed another nice touch which is the BGM front and rear shockers (an expensive and worthwhile suspension upgrade) and the tubeless wheel rims which are designed to aid you in the event of a puncture and balance the wheels more effectively.

The Appeal

We love this Lambretta for it’s fantastic mix of old and new technology and we can see it taking pride of place at (or on the way to) any scooter rally on the 2022 calendar across Britain.
With it’s fabulous 20hp touring TS1 engine you can be sure you’ll get there reliably and quickly - and tell your mates you’re a TS1 owner!

We’d have this in a heartbeat and we’re sure it’s the perfect step into the Scootering world or the perfect machine for a Lambretta owner who’s had 100’s of the machines.
