The Background

Launched in 1965 at the Earls Court Motor Show, the MGB GT was launched as a four-cylinder Coupe. This was the first MG to use a unitary structure over the traditional body-on-frame design used on the MGA and MG T-series.

The MGB was also one of the first vehicles to feature a crumple zone, protecting both the driver and passenger in the event of an accident. The sporty coupe was designed by non-other than the famous design house Pininfarina.

The GT came fitted with the same 1.8 litre engine used in the Roadster, but the GT had a higher cruising speed over the Roadster, thanks to the superior aerodynamics of the Coupe bodyshell.

The car was an instant success and liked because it was a very practical sports car.

The MGB GT remained the same until 1969, when some small interior styling changes were made, including the provision for reclining front seats, and pre 1974 models such as this one came with chrome bumpers and are classed by most as the better looking, who are we to disagree?

The History

The seller of this nicely presented 1969 MGB GT has been the owner for approximately 8 months. As a collector of MG’s, the seller always has one or two being swapped and changed out of his collection when something new comes up for sale.

This is exactly what's happened with this lovely MG. Having seen the car for sale and already having had a recent respray, it made perfect sense to buy it. The car has had 4 previous keepers, 3 of which have been in the same family since 1982.

The car just needed some additional parts to be replaced to bring it up to scratch and finish it off to a standard the MG collector would be happy with. This has included a new set of wheels, front and rear bumpers and some other small items of trim.

With the car now completed, running like a dream and it is time to move it on as another car the seller quite fancies has been spotted for sale.

The Paperwork

The V5 for the MG is present and shows 4 Previous keepers.

The car has been given a full MOT valid until 16th March 2023, where it passed with no advisories.

There are some invoices for parts such as the wheels and other trim pieces, but unfortunately, not a great deal before this.

The Interior

Inside, the MG is in excellent condition. The seller is not sure if the seats have been re-trimmed, but we can only go on the condition in front of us and either way, the seats present really well, with no excessive damage or wear to be seen, other than a small crease in the driver’s bolster. The door cards are also of the same condition, with no noticeable scuffs to be seen.

The dashboard is in good condition, with no splits or cracks to the top. The fascia looks to be in good order along with the original Smiths instruments, bright and clear.

These are reported to be working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 27,527 miles, but there is no evidence sadly to verify this.

The switchgear is all in good condition, with no apparent signs of wear to the lettering, and it is all reported to be working as it should. The three spoke steering wheel is in good condition, again with no signs of excessive wear to point out.

A Maystar radio cassette player is fitted, and lower down is the graphic equaliser connected to two rear mounted Pioneer speakers.

The black carpets are in good condition with just a slight amount of wear to be seen, and in the boot area has a clean carpet. Lifting this reveals the Rostyle spare wheel. The headlining is sitting nice and tight and shows no signs of any sagging.

The Exterior

The MG B GT has been finished in what is thought to be the original paint colour of Flamenco (Orange Red), but as this was repainted before the seller purchased the car, we cannot say for certain.

However, the paintwork around the MG is in excellent condition with a deep looking lustre finish. There are no dings or dents to mention, nor are there any stone chips to point out as the car hasn’t been used a great deal since the bodywork was completed.

The panels on the vehicle align well, with an even panel gap around the bonnet, boot and doors, and looking from the side, it seems to be as straight as you would expect. The seller has fitted a set of four MG mud flaps which look well, and prevent any unwanted stone chips from appearing to the sides.

The chrome work is in excellent order, with the trim around the windows having some light age-related scratches. The headlight surrounds have a bright finish, and the bumpers to the front and rear have been replaced.

The original overriders have been used and have a very slight amount of tarnish to them, probably more noticeable next to the bright new bumpers. The headlights and taillights are free from any splits or cracks.

The seller has opted for some 15” Minilite wheels, which were purchased new and have since only covered  a few miles. There are four matching Avon ZT7 tyres which are like new.

The Mechanics

The 1.8 engine is an Ivor Searle engine. This has been given a fluid change, check over, and the carburettors correctly set up, which has made a world of difference to the running of the MG.

A polished MG rocker cover has been fitted, which sets off the gold block engine well. The MG fires up with the flick of the key and sounds as it should, with the air sucking into the twin SU carburettors and no untoward noises coming from the engine.

The MG is fitted with a 4-speed gearbox with overdrive available in 3rd and 4th via a button on the dashboard. The seller reports that this works just as it should, with no noises coming from the transmission, and the car comes to a stop as it should in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The seller was also keen to point out that having driven several MG’s in various forms, Coupes and Roadsters, this one is a really nice car to drive.

The underside looks to be in good order, finished with an underseal type material. There is no excessive corrosion to any of the suspension components other than the odd patch of surface corrosion.

The Appeal

The MGB was a hugely popular car when it was made and is now still as popular in the classic car market. This does mean there are quite a few available when you start looking around, but finding one well presented can sometimes be quite a challenge.

This one has been nicely finished and has an Ivor Searle engine fitted, with new 15” Minilite wheels and tyres, which means it is equipped to whiz off around the countryside for an afternoon pub lunch, or take to the show field at a classic car rally.

It is quite simply ready to drive and enjoy!

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
