The Appeal

An MG is always a popular classic for many people to consider. Whether you are a first-time Classic buyer or you are adding to a collection, the MG range is always rewarding. You have the resources of many Specialist outlets and Engineers that are more than willing to help keep your beloved MG on the road. One little GT that has taken full advantage of these facilities is this 1972 version in Blaze Orange.

Over the years this has been in and out of Specialist facilities to keep it right. One of those instances was to repair the front end after a bump in 1998, but the car has survived and has been the recipient of plenty of new parts, a restoration and some upgrades too. All in all, it has had a significant amount of money spent on it, and much of it quite recently allowing someone to inherit quite a car.

The History and Paperwork

  • Copious amount of invoices
  • Itemised list of expenditure
  • Bodywork repaired and restored
  • Many new components replaced
There are a couple of folders that will come with this car, one that covers expenditures while in the current owner’s keep and another for expenses before that. The money spent is quite significant and the invoices clearly show that the car has been important to the owners in question. It has been in a frontal accident in 1998 which was repaired.

However, the current owner discovered that the repairs were not as satisfactory as he would hoped and had more extensive reparations made in 2013. The invoices also show a replacement engine in 1991, an unleaded head in 2016, and lots of other minor restorations and upgrades over the years including a wire wheel conversion.

The Interior

  • Replacement Seats in 1996
  • Original Carpeting
  • Weathershields Sunroof
  • General interior condition is good
During the exterior restoration in 1996, a new pair of navy blue seats were fitted and they are still in good condition today and are without any major imperfections. The carpet is in fair condition which shows some wear but is still very serviceable.

The instruments are all clear and in place and the owner assures that everything works as it should. The boot contains a wire wheel and standard tools. The Weathershields roof operates properly and the headling is fairly good with just a small tear at the rear pillar on the passenger side.

The Exterior

  • Original Blaze Orange scheme
  • Black Vinyl Roof
  • Unusual Black Vinyl on the tailgate
  • Restored and repaired bodywork
  • Very recent restoration to front wings and screen surround
This GT presents itself well with its bright Blaze Orange paintwork and contrasting black roof. The car also has the unusual addition of having the black vinyl continuing onto the tailgate creating a very different look. The car has visited the paint shop several times in its life and unfortunately one of those times was for accident damage repairs.

That said, the body looks straight and has a nice gloss to it and the only area of obvious corrosion is on the rear wing join on the offside which is a common site of possible rust. It does need to be taken into consideration that the car is 50 years old and is wearing its age well.

The Mechanics

  • New Engine fitted at 79500 miles
  • New Unleaded Cylinder Head 2016
  • Chassis Repairs 2013
  • New Steering Rack 2016
  • Wire Wheel conversion with axle in 2019
  • Koni dampers rear only with parabolic springs
The amount of money and attention bestowed upon this car is significant. There is a long list of components fitted and restorations that have taken place over the years. Being a 50-year-old vehicle does mean that reparations will generally be ongoing but it does inspire a degree of confidence in its future because so much has been done already.

Future-proofing is well underway too with the addition of an unleaded cylinder head. The engine, although not the original has only covered 32,000 since installation, again helping secure the future running of this iconic MG.

Summary

Everyone loves an MG, whether a Midget, a B or like this little Jaffa Cake of a GT, they are still immensely popular and have a huge fan base. The benefit of that popularity is that you are never far away from a Supplier or Expert that will help out with whatever your MG needs.

That said, buying an MG that has already had a substantial amount of work and money spent on it represents a sensible proposition, and this one is a very sensible proposition indeed.

The files that contain the expenditure give an eye-watering indication of how much has already been invested in this car and the extent of the work. If someone else has done the work then that means you don’t have to, and that’s got to be a very good reason for looking into buying this MG B GT before someone else does.
