1972 MGB GT

Highlights

• Highly presentable inside and out.
• Low mileage.
• Fully restored a few years ago.

Background

In July 1962, the MGB replaced the MGA, which was in production from 1955 and sold over 100,000 units. Variants of the MGB include the three-door GT 2+2 four-cylinder coupé (as offered here), the six-cylinder MGC sports car and coupé (1967-69) and the MGB GT V8 2+2 coupé (1973-76). Sales for all variants of the MGB totalled an impressive 523,836 cars.

The fixed-roof MGB GT was introduced in October 1965, with strong sales ensuring its continued production until 1980. It sported a ground-breaking greenhouse-like cabin designed by Italian styling house Pininfarina and introduced the sporty ‘hatchback’ body style. By combining the sloping rear window with the rear deck lid, the MGB GT offered the utility of a station wagon while retaining the style and shape of a coupé.

With excellent all-round visibility, this new configuration was a 2+2 design with a right-angled rear bench seat and far more luggage space than in the roadster. Relatively few components differed, although the MGB GT did receive different suspension springs and anti-roll bars and a different windscreen which was more easily and inexpensively serviceable.

Among many accolades the car received, Road & Track declared the MGB GT one of ‘Pininfarina’s 16 most beautiful designs - that aren't Ferraris’.

Although acceleration of the GT was slightly slower than that of the roadster, owing to its increased weight, top speed improved by 5 mph to 105 mph, due to it having better aerodynamics.

The History

UNO 827K was built between the 26th and 31st May, 1972, and dispatched to London-based MG retailers Stewart and Arden Ltd a few days later on 2nd June, 1972. During the intervening 49 years, it is likely that each of its 15 former keepers loved it more than the previous.

The car left the Abingdon factory fitted with ‘Rostyle’ wheels, overdrive, a set of radials, tinted glass, cigar lighter, a brake servo unit, inertia reel seatbelts, headrests and a heated rear window.

The current owner acquired the car in early 2021 from a friend who had just bought an MGB Roadster, thus rendering this MGB GT surplus to his requirements.

In the last decade the car has received a thorough and complete ‘rotisserie restoration’, with no nut or bolt left unrestored or replaced. The intended condition when finished – as it is today – was one of ‘lovingly used’ rather than concourse.

The vendor had hoped to return to classic motoring with the MGB GT, but admits his heart lies elsewhere in the classic car world and has offered up this well-loved example to go to a new home.

The Paperwork

Along with the V5C, there are a number of service and maintenance receipts from recent years, a Certified Copy of a Factory Record, issued by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and previous MOT certificates. Unfortunately, there is no owner’s handbook or service and maintenance record book.

The odometer shows a mileage of 32,218, although the owner says it is ‘more likely around 42,000’, as the dials were changed for a cleaner set during the car’s restoration. There are a number of previous MOT’s to support the low mileage, in addition to an online MOT history check which shows it being around 39,000 miles prior to its restoration.

The Interior

The MGB GT original interior reflects its ‘lovingly used’ condition and is a delightful place to spend some immersive road time. Beneath the tidy carpets, the floor is said by the owner to be ‘immaculate’.

The rear parcel shelf is covered in matching carpet and protective chrome floor rails, beneath which is retained the fifth spare alloy wheel and associated tools. A nice touch is the neat pair of chromed sill plates bearing the MG logo.

Commensurate with the car’s mileage, the door cards and furniture appear in very good order and overall, the interior presents to a high standard.

The Exterior

Along with the smart and tidy interior, the car’s exterior is highly presentable. The paintwork gleams to a high standard and all the brightwork is said to be new. The front and rear lights are clear of the usual age-related fog and all electrics are said to be in working order.

The underside of the car has been freshly resealed and again presents in very good order. The current owner makes mention of the driver’s door which currently ‘hangs a little low’, but which will be rectified prior to collection by the new keeper.

The Mechanics

The owner reports that the car was serviced earlier this year, but has enjoyed ‘a few hundred miles’ in the car since then. The car is said to ‘drive great’ and the tyres are in fine order.

The Appeal

Bangers ‘n’ mash, pints of bitter, mowing the lawn or washing cars by hand on a sunny Sunday, the iconic MGB GT is a staple of everyday life in Britain.

Since its introduction in 1965, it has gone on to become one of Britain’s most loved and collectable sports cars, bringing stylish Pininfarina design, an exciting drive and everyday usability to thousands of drivers who were only too happy to switch from sensible but sterile business sedans to something that put a skip in their step and delivered a hundred smiles-per-gallon.

This example of the MGB GT is in fine condition throughout and should serve its new owner for many more years to come – and not just on Sundays.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
