The ‘Bay Window’ Volkswagen van was built in 1972 and was converted to a camper by Dormobile UK Limited. Due to the popularity of these vans for camper conversions, many companies built them all with different interiors and sleeping arrangements. The most famous is Westfalia of Germany who’s camper interiors (Westies) are the most coveted, but each interior has good points.
This particular van was restored and resprayed in 2000, and recently a new Mexican engine was installed. The missing interior units have been found and the van returned to its original delivery interior in 1972.
The Volkswagen “Daisy” has been the pride and joy of the present owner for the past 14 years. Daisy has been great fun to own and the family have enjoyed many great holidays together with memories that will always be cherished. Since purchasing the Volkswagen in 2008, the engine had just been replaced, so that was a big plus concerning the mechanical side of things. Some welding has been carried out on the Volkswagen, and the vendor mentioned it is structurally sound all round.
The upholstery inside has also been renewed sympathetic to the original styling. The V5 is present and correct, and the Volkswagen is Tax and MOT exempt. The current owner had kept this all up to date until Covid kicked, in and it’s not been used much since then.
The Interior looks great with the upholstery being refurbished and brought back to its former glory. The small table can be set up for meals and also doubles up as a support for the double bed.
There are also plenty of storage compartments throughout to store food and kitchen utensils. The sink and drainer are all original, and the cool box is also present. There is also a pop up stove located under the front passenger seat. The van comes with two batteries, one being a leisure battery for interior lighting. The pop up elevating roof works well with two fold out single beds available.
First impressions are that this is a solid looking Volkswagen camper van for its age. It has spent all of its life on the southwest coast of England and recently on the North east coast of Scotland as you will notice from the pictures there are some rust and paint issues. Depending on what the new owner decides, the van would appreciate a visit to the bodyshop. The wheels could also do with a clean up and new set of hubcaps. The rubber seals on the doors have been replaced. The hinged door on the engine bay will need attention, as one of the hinges is corroded.
The engine is a 1600 air cooled engine. As mentioned there was nothing to be done to the engine as it was new on purchase of the camper van, and has only covered just over 14,000 miles!
Apart from regular servicing and maintenance, the van has only needed a new battery during the past 14 years.
This is an excellent opportunity to own an original iconic Volkswagen camper van with many original features. Daisy is fit and roadworthy and looking forward to some new adventures. There is a massive fan base for these vans, and many shows and events are available in the UK.
