The Appeal
Alongside the Bora, the Merak was Maserati’s bid for mid-engined glory, a V6 car designed to take on Ferrari’s Dino 308 GT4 head-on. Where the GT4 looked a little ungainly, excellent Giugiaro design and packaging clever hid the Merak’s practical 2+2 layout.
The SS was announced in 1975 and in showrooms in 1976. This ‘Super Sport’ version got a raft of improvements that make the less than 1,000 built especially desirable. Notable upgrades include a power hike to 220bhp, thanks to raised compression and triple carburettors, and a revised interior with Maserati rather than Citroen-derived wheel and dashboard.
A Maserati Certificate of Origin and the car’s original sales invoice confirm that this 1977 car is a genuine SS. It retains its factory Rosso Fuoro over a rare grey velour combination, all of it in very good condition. The vendor acquired the car five years ago in Germany and tells us that it has undergone a thorough mechanical overhaul.
A great example of the rare and stylish Merak SS, with the provenance you hope to find.

The Mechanics
- 3.0-litre (2,970cc) Maserati SS-specification 220bhp V6 engine
- Matching numbers engine as shown in photos
- Triple Weber carburettors
- Five-speed manual transmission
- Recent mechanical overhaul advised by seller
- Driven very little since purchase
- The vendor reports the car is easy to drive and performing as it should
The Merak uses a 3L version of Giulio Alfieri’s V6, mated to a five-speed gearbox. The SS got raised compression and triple Weber carburettors to hike power by 30bhp to 220bhp. This car retains its correct SS engine, verified by photos and Maserati factory paperwork. We are told that the car has received a recent mechanical overhaul but otherwise has been used little. The vendor reports that the car runs and drives well.
