The Appeal

Six-cylinder engines are usually reserved for four-wheeled machines, so you know when they’re fitted between the frames of a bike, it’s going to be something rather interesting…
Enter the CBX1000; unveiled in the UK in 1978, the six-cylinder 1047cc CBX1000 sold slowly due to its high list price (£2,750.00) and the fact that only one insurance company in the UK would cover riders at the time, making them prohibitively expensive to both own and run.
In 1981, Honda made the choice to turn the CBX1000 into a more touring-oriented bike, and released the Pro-Link as seen here, with a full fairing, optional luggage pack, air suspension and more.
This particular example was purchased by the current owner to add to his growing collection of classic and retro motorbikes, but a shift back towards four-wheeled classics means that this wonderful six-cylinder tourer is now back on the market - just in time for summer!

History/Paperwork

  • Significant recent expenditure at a cost of over £4,600 including replacement of all valve stem seals, setting clearances and more (detailed in the ‘mechanicals’ section below)
  • Original order form from 1982 present
  • Owners manual
  • Miniature tool kit
  • Miscellaneous older service documentation
  • Garaged throughout current ownership
  • Mot to 21/9/23 but is now deemed Historic Vehicle
  • The vendor reports they are waiting on the V5C with historic status but that it should arrive any day now

The Interior

  • The handlebars and gauges show some light usage patina in keeping with the bike’s overall condition, age and mileage
  • The seat has a few very light imperfections and marks, but no signs of any damage, rips or tears
  • There are no known or reported faults, warning lights or issues with any of the gauges or displays

The Exterior

  • Excellent condition throughout
  • Crisp, clear graphics and great paintwork
  • Some small chips noted on the rear edges of the pannier tanks, along with a few minor commensurate imperfections such as stone chips to the front fairing and lower edges of the fairings
  • Both wheels in excellent condition
  • No sign of any damage or cracking to the bodywork

The Mechanicals

  • Fresh from a signifiant programme of engine maintenance in which the following areas were addressed:
    • Valve seals replaced
    • New valve stem seals
    • Pistons checked, and new base gaskets fitted
    • re-set valve clearances
    • new H/T leads
    • Brake system overhaul
  • The engine itself looks to be in excellent condition, with fantastic chrome and no obvious signs of any fluid leaks or misting
  • The vendor reports no known faults with the bike
  • On account of its age, the bike is now registered as a Historic Vehicle and is exempt from mandatory MoT testing
  • Electric clock not working

Summary

Offered for sale with only test milage covered since a partial engine rebuild and in excellent overall condition, this is a great chance to obtain a six-cylinder CBX100 Pro-Link in great condition which is ready to simply hop on and enjoy as Honda intended.
