Incredible, pretty much complete history file from Day One

THE APPEAL
Replacing a legend is never easy, but with the Mk 1 Golf scheduled to go out of production at the end of 1983, Volkswagen was left with no choice but to pension off the original GTI.
Its successor was, of course, more of the wonderful same, but not before VW’s engineers allowed the first-generation model to go out with a bang in the form of the Campaign – a run-out GTI offered to order only in August and September 1983, to bring the series to an end.
It was the ultimate evolution of the Mk 1, equipped with the new 1.8-litre engine that would be the stalwart of the next three generations of Golf GTI and featuring desirable 80s extras such as its 14-inch Pirelli P-Slot alloy wheels, a trip computer and a leather-bound steering wheel.
All Campaigns are sought after, but this one is something else. It was owned by its original keeper from brand new until late 2021, when he passed away and the car was passed, via probate, to a family member who is now selling it. It has two keepers on the V5, but the reality is that it was only really ever owned by one person. The vendor is very keen for it to go to a home where it will be as well loved and cherished as it has been from the very day it was driven away from Ian Skelly Volkswagen in Liverpool on September 6, 1983. There’s even a letter with correspondence between the buyer and the dealership about limited availability of Diamond Silver examples. They tried to offer red or black, but he quite clearly dug his heels in

Mostly original but has seen some restoration work over the years, including bodywork repairs to all four arches and some paintwork in 2011, to address some corrosion

Reported by vendor’s garage to be in structurally excellent condition
Surface corrosion on suspension components, may need future attention
Original P-Slot alloys in good order, but not perfect. Would require some cosmetic attention to make perfect
There are multiple reasons why this car appeals. Starting with the obvious, it’s a Mk 1 Golf GTI, the seminal hot hatch. Then there’s the fact it’s a Campaign, which was the final evolution of the model and as good as a Mk 1 GTI could possibly get. Those two elements alone would make it quite special.
But this car is even more than that. It’s a car with a story to tell, of a lifetime of being in the hands of one owner who cherished, loved and adored it for 38 years of his life. A good home for the car is imperative, as it meant so much to the original owner. A reluctant sale, but a necessary one. You won’t find another Mk 1 like this – it’s a very special car indeed.
