The Appeal
In the 80s and early 90s, if your priorities erred towards limousine-style space and luxury, then you could have bought a Rolls-Royce. But if you wanted a car thoroughly engineered as if intended to travel to the moon and back, then you wanted Mercedes’ W126 with the long wheelbase ‘SEL’ option.
As a highly preserved 1991 car that has been used and enjoyed, this very smart 500 SEL is proof of the hard work put in by those Mercedes engineers. Despite 35 years and close to 190,000 miles, it looks like a car with a fraction of either figure. The attractive Blue Black metallic paint and beige leather, with its burr walnut root trim, are in very good order.
The vendor acquired the car in 2021 and tells us that it has always been garaged. He recently spent £2,000 on servicing and other work with Mercedes specialist Sapphire Auto, resulting in a clean MOT pass valid to February 2027. That work adds to a large history file, much of it spent with Mercedes main dealers.
There’s a strong case to argue that the W126 is the best-engineered executive car ever built. Here’s a chance to find out - with this one, you can enjoy it equally from the front or rear seats.
The vendor says:
“The engine starts and runs perfectly, there are no issues at all, there have been no modifications. There are no faults,
“Given the way the car runs and looks, you would not be able to tell that it has done 186,000 miles. Interior is very clean.”
