THE APPEAL
There was a time that Toyota MR2s were seen on a daily basis, but like most cars, they have become more scarce over the years. With not too many around, finding one with such low ownership, mileage and in original condition is a real treat.
We present you with what might as well be described as a one-owner 1992 Toyota MR2 GT-i, and what a stunner it is! With just 48,414 miles covered, the car is unmolested and in fantastic condition for the year, and it comes with a nice collection of invoices which have been retained over the years.
A lovely two-seater Japanese classic waiting for someone to continue the love for the MR2. Form an orderly queue, it is sure to generate a lot of interest.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Registration document is present
- Husband and wife owned, confirmed with the name on the original sales invoice
- Registered 22nd September 1992
- Owner’s handbooks and service book
- 15 Service stamps
- Full MOT
From new, the MR2 remained with the owner until 2017, when he sadly passed away. It was then put into his wife’s name and inadvertently put another keeper on the V5. Even though she never really used the car, it was always taken for an MOT just to give her peace of mind, so that if she did decide to take it out, the MR2 would have been ready.
The handbooks and wallet are present along with the 15-stamp service book, and the last service was carried out at 46,272 miles. There are some invoices for work carried out and even the original sales invoice. There will be a full MOT on the car by the time the auction ends.
THE INTERIOR
- Blue material trim
- Original features
- Electric windows and mirrors
- Original tool kit
Inside the MR2 is period correct for 1992, and you could quite easily be thinking you are back there, looking at a car which is 4-5 years old. Finished in blue material with a black fleck, the seats are in excellent condition for the year and have just the smallest amount of wear to the driver's side bolster. The door cards are in good order with no scuffs or damage to mention, and the switches for the windows and mirrors are in good condition and working correctly.
The dashboard is typical of the era, and all looks to be in good condition. The instruments are working correctly, with an odometer reading of 48,414 miles, and no warning lights when the car is running. For your entertainment, the standard factory fit head-unit is still in place and working correctly. The rest of the switchgear and heater controls are in good condition with no apparent signs of wear.
Looking up, the headlining is in place as it should be, with no sagging; there are also no signs of staining around the sunroof.
The carpets are in good condition and have a set of mats fitted for extra protection. The spare wheel is present in the front luggage compartment along with the Toyota tool kit, and the rear luggage area is nice and clean, with no issues to point out.
THE EXTERIOR
- Original Zircon Blue paintwork
- Wheels refurbished
- Presents well
- Pop up headlights
Finished in Zircon Blue Metallic, which was a £160 optional extra at the time, the MR2 presents exceptionally well. Starting at the front, there are minimal stone chips to point out; the original dealer plates are still present. There is a small scuff on the offside front corner. The lights are all in good condition with no splits or cracks to the lenses, and the pop-up headlights work as they should. The bonnet aligns nicely with an equal panel gap along each wing rail.
Looking down the flanks of the sleek sports car, everything appears to be in order, and the doors have a matching gap on both sides. The windows are in excellent condition, with no noticeable scratches jumping out, and the Toyota security decals are still in place. The window trims are also in good condition with no signs of age. The MR2 has a sunroof fitted which opens and closes correctly. There is a very light dent on the roof towards the rear on the nearside, but it does look like this could be removed by a paintless dent specialist; obviously, this would need to be confirmed by them.
To the rear, the lights are in good condition with no splits to the lenses. However, there has been a knock on the offside corner, which has split the paint. Again, a smart repair should be able to tackle this, but we do say it would need to be confirmed by a professional. The wheels have been given a freshen up and are therefore in excellent condition. The tyres are all in good order with plenty of miles remaining.
THE MECHANICS
- 2.0 litre 16 valve
- Five-speed manual transmission
- New clutch in 2019
- Mid-engine
Fitted with a 2.0 litre twin cam 16 valve engine, the MR2 produces 154bhp. The car starts up as it should from cold with no signs or sounds of anything untoward. The vehicle is reported to drive as it should, pulling well through the five-speed manual gearbox.
The brakes all look to be in good order with no apparent signs of a lip to the front discs, and the seller reports these bring the MR2 to a stop in a straight line. Looking under the car, there were no signs of any leaks at the time of our visit, and it's clear to see that the car has been in dry storage for several years from the condition of the underside.
