• Very rare low mileage car • All-round excellent condition • Recent interior upgrade to high standard
THE BACKGROUND
Available in the UK between 1992 and 1996, the VW Corrado was always a great looking car. When VW decided to release the VR6 Corrado Storm, you could be forgiven for thinking that limiting production to 500 was an attempt to increase value through artificial scarcity, but it’s probably closer to the truth to say it was a celebratory farewell to a truly stunning car.
This is a model that beautifully balances precision, power, and comfort to create a serious driving machine. Upon release it was high performance, and it still holds its own today. Featuring a 2.9-litre VR6 engine, with 190bhp, it boasts 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 146mph, putting it firmly into Porsche 968 territory. But VW was keen to tick more than just the performance box; luxury and style were key too. 15-inch BBS Solitude alloys, leather upholstery, heated front seats, Sony CD player all came as standard.
Available in two shades of pearl paintwork - Mystic Blue or Dragon Green, its track-adjusting rear suspension, power steering, and ABS confirmed that the all-important driving experience was at the heart of their thinking. Corrado VR6 STORM-35.jpg8.98 MB
THE HISTORY
The current owner purchased the car in April 2019 having searched high and low for one in the right condition. Back then it had c.71k miles and today stands at 73,150. Much of that was collecting it from Watford and driving it to its current home of Aberdeenshire.
The car has an excellent history up to the current owner’s acquisition, spending much of its life in Guernsey. It was mainly serviced at VW and has been exceptionally well cared for since being with the current owner, having much of its work carried out by a VW specialist and then by VW themselves. It recently had all seat belts replaced at VW and all the old halogen lights have been replaced with LEDs.
These cars were already special when they rolled out of the factory, but this example takes things up a notch. The current owner completely removed the interior so he could refurbish to a higher spec. D-Class Automotive were instructed to replace the seats with black Porsche napa leather combined with period chequered cloth. D-Class had to change 63 pieces of plastic in the car from beige to black.
Well, if you’re striping the whole lot back to soundproof the car with Dynamat, you may as well, right? Especially when you’ve forked out £2k on a stereo consisting of a retro head-unit, Focal Amp and JL Audio sub-woofer and speakers.
Audio playback clearly ranks pretty highly on the current owner’s priority list. Evidently, no expense was spared. Even the ceiling is made from black alcantara.
Put it this way, when you sit in this car, you need a very compelling reason to get out again.
The bodywork looks in excellent shape and it’s just as well because such beautiful lines on a car need to be preserved.
There are a few minor marks on the front grill and a minor mark on very lower part of the passenger door, but one needs to look hard to spot them. A recent wax has nicely brought out the original colour too.
Anything requiring attention has been attended to, entrusting Bavaria Auto-Werke Ltd in Aberdeen to carry out servicing. Since acquiring two years ago the brake discs, pads and callipers have been upgraded to Brembo. The discs are also vented, greatly improving the stopping power over the originals.
Shock absorbers have also been upgraded to Bilstein. The battery and exhaust have also been replaced by the current owner.Corrado VR6 STORM-14.jpg4.99 MB
THE APPEAL
Frankly, the roar of the VR6 engine coupled with ‘those lines’ is surely enough.
Although 97,521 Corrados were manufactured worldwide, fewer than 6,000 made it to the UK and just over 3,500 were VR6 models. 500 were VR6 Storms and supply has dwindled fast. A quick look at www.howmanyleft.co.uk reveals that just seven remain licensed in the UK.
These are such refined looks for a 25-year-old car and it’s one of the sweetest driving coupes of the era. With a complete interior upgrade by some of the best in the trade, fantastic history and low mileage, this represents a rare opportunity to purchase a slice of 90’s motoring brilliance.
