In the sixties and seventies Maserati was a sports car brand to rival Ferrari. But by the time the eighties arrived things had started to tail off a little on the styling front and they became a brand rival to BMW, with italian heritage. Although now finding an eighties Maserati would be classed as pretty cool.

By the time 1997 came Fiat, who had a 50% share in the company, sold it to Maserati’s arch rival Ferrari. In 1998 the new chapter began when they launched the new 3200 GT, the new Grand Tourer. This was powered by a 3.2 twin-turbocharged V8 and was designed by Italdesign and founder Giorgetto Giugiaro who previously designed other models such as the Ghibli, Bora and Merak. He was also named car designer of the century in 1999. By 1999 Ferrari had taken full control and made Maserati its luxury division. They started by replacing the 1940’s facility with a completely new factory.

The Maserati 3200 GT (Tipo 338) was announced in July 1998 and presented to the press in September by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo. Also present were the designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, and veteran Maserati racing driver Sir Stirling Moss. It made its public debut in October 1998 in Paris at the Mondial de l’Automobile. 

With the launch of the 3200 GT, Maserati felt that they were back with an affordable supercar that ticked all the boxes and was enough to place them once again in a good financial position.

This particular Maserati 3200 GT was registered on 1st march 2000. In its twenty one year history the car has only covered 28,611 miles which is an astonishingly low average of 1,029 miles per year!

The seller has owned the Maserati for 6 years. Whilst being a joy to own, it's safe to say with such low mileage the GT hasn’t been used to its full potential, having only covered 2,000 miles since 2014 and only 10,000 miles since 2006. It’s quite obvious that with such low usage the seller has now decided to part with the GT and let someone else have the pleasure of owning such the Grand Tourer. 

It’s worth pointing out that in 2019 there was a service carried out at 27,969 miles, just 642 miles ago, where the cambelt was replaced. Quite an expensive job for the new owner not to worry about.  

The V5 is present and shows the 3200 GT has had 5 previous keepers, the last one before the seller had owned the car for 10 years. The Maserati has currently got an MOT that expires on 28th September 2021.

The GT comes with the Maserati owners manual, assistance book and the all important service book, which has a total of 12 service stamps. There is also a documented folder that holds receipts and invoices from various Maserati dealers and specialists. The car comes complete with two keys. 

The inside of the maserati is in lovely condition. Open the door and you are graced with an abundance of leather! Everything is covered in it. The comfortable Nero leather seats are in very good condition with no sagging to the squabs. The bolsters are good on both seats and don’t show any real signs of wear, other than some age related creases as you would expect. The door cards are trimmed in half leather and are in excellent condition.

From the driver’s seat the steering wheel is in a nice tidy condition. The dashboard and glove box are finished with leather and this is all scuff free. The instruments all work as they should and show no warning lights. The odometer is showing as already mentioned 28,611. Moving across to the centre console and heater surround, the plastic/rubber finish on the heater controls, the air vents and also the buttons below the factory fit Becker Mexico head unit have started to deteriorate a little, but they all work as they should. The foot pedals still have a nice and clear Maserati logo with little wear. The carpets are all in excellent condition to the front and rear, as is the head lining. So too are the passenger seat and rear seat, both have had not much use at all.   

Into the boot area and always nice to see present is the original tool kit in the Maserati bag. To the left located behind the access door is the factory fit Becker CD multi changer. Over to the right behind the access panel is the battery, relays and fuses. Again, just like the passenger area, the boot carpet is in excellent condition. 

Finished in the Grigio Touring metallic this 2000 3200 GT looks stunning! Starting at the front of the Maserati, that huge open mouth grill with the Maserati badge sitting pride of place is in fabulous condition with the mesh all nice and  straight. The bumper does have some very small stone chips but only as you would expect with 28,000 miles. The headlights are free from cracks and are clear and bright as are the indicators. The panel gaps from the wing to bonnet edge are straight and uniform. 

Moving around to the sides and the car looks spectacular with those Italian designed curves flowing front to rear. The doors align as they should and the panel gap is equal on both sides. There are a couple of very very small dinks down the sides but you really do have to look. 

Onto the rear of the GT and wow! A bit of trivia for you now….. did you know that Maserati were the first manufacturer in the world to use LED rear lights which were known on the 3200 as the boomerang due to their shape. The boot aligns just as it should and there are no scuffs to the bumper. Protruding from the rear valance are the 4 tailpipes that the Maserati sings from. 

The wheels are 18 inch and are in excellent condition. They did receive a refurbish about 6 years ago and as already mentioned since then they've not done a lot since then. The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport and have good tread left on them. 

The engine in the Maserati 3200 GT is a 3.2 litre Twin Turbo V8 which as you can imagine has plenty of power on tap, producing 370 bhp and a whopping 376 ft-lb of torque. It also doesn’t hang about with a 0-60mph of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 175 mph. 

The 3.2 V8 is a strong and robust engine, but is best when it has a full history to back up the mileage. The previous owners and seller have ensured that this has happened, and the all important timing belt was replaced just 642 miles ago. The 3.2 is mated to the more desirable  6-speed manual gearbox version.

The 3200 GT fires up at the first turn of the key and the lovely sounding burble from the 3.2 litre Twin Turbo sounds just as it should with no knocks or unwanted noises coming from the engine.  The seller reports that the Maserati drives with no noises coming from the gearbox or drivetrain. It pulls strong and goes smoothly through the gears, although you may need to brace yourself when the turbo spools up for some 90’s turbo boost! Another snippet of trivia is that just 2,689 manual 3200 GT’s were produced. 

The GT stops as well as it goes with the help of cross drilled, vented discs to the front and rear.  The calipers have the Maserati lettering up front, which are twin piston and made by Brembo.

With just an average of 1,029 miles a year over its 21 year life and extensive history, with a recent cambelt change, it’s safe to say that this 3200 GT has plenty of miles left in it.

This Maserati 3200 GT is something that really does need to be considered if you are on the lookout for an affordable Grand Tourer that has great styling, handling and massive grin factor performance and lets not forget, it's technically made by Ferrari. What's not to like?
