The Appeal

With a trident on the nose and a Ferrari V8 under the bonnet, this model of Maserati represents a truly beguiling chapter in the marque’s history.

And what’s in a name?

Officially, what you’re looking at here is named the Maserati Coupe, although we appreciate that this may sound ambiguous, and most fans agree as it’s commonly referred to as the 4200 GT.

This makes sense, as the Coupe (and its open-top sister, the Spyder) replaced the outgoing 3200 GT, a four-sear Grand Tourer which had been in production from 1998-2002.

That car’s name referred to the displacement of its 3.2-litre twin-turbo V8, so you can see the logical progression here.

When the Coupe launched in 2001, it took the essential silhouette of the 3200 and repackaged it with a 4.2-litre engine – this time naturally-aspirated, and borrowed from Ferrari.

It’s the same basic engine as you’ll find in the F430, California and 458, although in Maserati guise it runs a cross-plane crank for smoothness (as opposed to Ferrari’s more savage flat-plane crank arrangement).

This impressive motor is wrapped up in sumptuous curves penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, with a cosseting interior that wraps around you and positively encourages you to point the Maser’s nose at the horizon and go seeking adventure.

You’ve got a mighty 385bhp under your right foot, but this isn’t an arms race – the Coupe was conceived as a luxurious cruiser with a sporting edge, and it carries that banner with pride.

The example we have here shows two owners on the documents, although in fact the seller has owned it from new and at one point transferred official ownership to his partner.

It’s been maintained in no-expense-spared fashion too, as you can see from the history file – having been looked after by such respected names as H.R. Owen, Joe Macari and Autofficina, there are receipts here for many thousands of pounds for the upkeep of this Maserati – no corner has been cut, if it’s needed servicing or something required remedying, it’s all been done properly by the right people.

Today, the result is a special car that runs beautifully, is a pleasure to drive, in all-original condition, and with a whole lot of history to back it up.

The Interior

 • Front seats have just been refurbished
 • All-original spec
 • Maserati toolkit in boot

Maserati’s 4200 GT was conceived as a grand tourer, and the interior is a very comfortable place to find yourself.

The seats are tastefully trimmed and generously padded, and it's worth noting that the front seats have just been refurbished and look almost like new

The factory-fit multi-function screen and head unit all appears to be in proper working order, and the gauges and dials are all working correctly, including the distinctive and all-important Maserati clock in the centre of the dash.

The leather trim on the dash, glovebox and centre console is all in good condition.

All of the interior lights work, and the electric seats and windows are functioning correctly. There are no warning lights on the dash, and the headlining is complete and clean.

It’s all dry and tidy inside the boot, with the original Maserati toolkit, tyre inflator and 5-CD changer.

The Exterior

 • Desirable Grigio Touring paint
 • Wheels have been refurbished
 • Parking sensors have been replaced

The Grigio Touring paint is a shade that suits this tastefully styled Coupe extremely well – sober in shadows, but glittery and sparkling in the sunlight.

It’s got a lovely deep lustre to it, and the paintwork is tidy throughout, with the rear bumper having been repainted to eliminate any of those London-driver corner scuffs.

The light lenses and window glass are all in good condition with no stone chips or cracks, and all of the correct emblems and trim pieces are in place.

The car wears its original 18” alloy wheels, which have been refurbished at some point in the car’s life and present very well; they wear matching Michelin Pilot Sports all round.

Overall, a very tidy Maserati in all-original condition.

The Mechanicals

 • Superb runner with outstanding service history
 • Recent clutch
 • Recent major service

We can see from the history that this Maserati has always been meticulously serviced, and this is borne out by its impeccable manners today – it happily fires into life on the first turn of the key, and drives extremely smoothly.

The drivetrain of this car was engineered to be tractable and everyday-usable as well as entertaining, and the paddle-shift Cambiocorsa automated-manual transmission is a perfect complement to the cross-plane-crank Ferrari V8; with 385bhp and 333lb.ft to play with it’s always an effervescent ride.

With a full service history and all those receipts to back it up, this is a Maserati that comes with true peace of mind.

The seller reports no issues with the suspension, brakes or steering systems, and from our test drive everything does seem to be in excellent order – the car rides well, the engine pulls strongly and the transmission shifts smoothly.

With its light alloy double-wishbone suspension, anti-dive setup and in-built toe-in regulator it’s a car that’s cosseting when you’re cruising and agile in the corners, which is exactly what a Maserati grand tourer should be.

And we can confirm that the Sport button works, which really sharpens up those gearshifts!

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
