NO RESERVE - 1949 Alvis TA Mulliners Saloon

Highlights

  • Incredibly rare model
  • First post war production Alvis
  • Ideal candidate for restoration

The Appeal

With the war finally over, vehicle manufacturer Alvis could start back on the production of civilian cars, and first in line was the TA 14. There was however one issue, the Alvis factory had been destroyed during the war. Cue legendary coachbuilders Mulliners to come in, save the day and manufacture the all new model. Marketed as a sports saloon, the TA 14 boasted the lively performance and the high quality Alvis had been known for pre war and as such was a crucial car in revitalising the brand.
Backed by a large enthusiast community, this highly original, running and driving 1949 model makes an ideal candidate for restoration, and will in no time be the absolute star of a classic British or post war lineup.

The History and Paperwork

  • Left the factory on the 7th March 1949
  • Accompanied by original Alvis TA 14 instruction manual
  • Copies of several pieces of Alvis TA 14 owners literature
  • Original older style tax book
  • Several volumes of Alvis owners club literature
  • Extensive collection of service history from throughout the car’s life
  • Correct V5 registration document present
  • Both MOT and tax exempt due to historic status

The Interior

  • Original example
  • Will require restoration
  • Large collection of missing interior panels will accompany the car
An ideal candidate for restoration, the TA presented here boasts a highly original cabin, still fitted with many of its original fixtures, trim and furniture. Those examining the photographic package that accompanies the Alvis will of course note that there are several interior panels missing at present, however it should be noted that a large selection of the car’s original interior panels needed to smarten and finish up the cabin will accompany the car upon sale.
Front and rear we find simply excellent leather seating, with deep cushioning these really can be seen as the last word in comfort. Draped in brown leather these present in fair condition, exhibiting considerable signs of patina and will benefit from refurbishment.
Neat, simple and unclustered, the wooden dash panel is of a similarly good nature and presents as such, still fitted with its quality factory gauges, and mechanism for the openable front windscreen which still functions fully and with ease. Looking up, one is presented with an openable sunroof panel however at present this has not tried to be opened.

The Exterior

  • Classic, elegant design
  • Original trim and fixtures still present
  • Highly original example
Deep burgundy paintwork with subtle gold coachlines, the TA simply exudes class from the outside. Long curved lines blend with elegant chrome trim to create a true masterpiece of post war automotive design.
The paint itself is largely of a good standard however there are several places in which the finish is somewhat tarnished and shows signs of age and blemishing which would benefit from attention if one wished to restore this Alvis to its former glory. The lashings of chrome trim placed so elegantly around the car are in much better standing but are somewhat faded and showing their age.
The imposing front grille piece appears both solid and complete, presenting in a good standard, and whilst it is not present in the photographs, the car will come with the correct Alvis bonnet ornament.
At ground level we are presented with four excellent colour matched burgundy wheels, well appointed with excellent chrome Alvis wheel trims. All four are of a good standard and present as such, with a fifth spare wheel being stowed within its own bespoke panel in the rear tailgate.

The Mechanics

  • Excellent tried and tested Alvis 4 cylinder engine
  • Good quality original example
  • Running driving example
Whilst the TA’s exterior design proved to be an all new post war affair, the mighty 1892 cc engine nestled under the bonnet was very much a tried and tested example utilising engineering and designs hailing from the pre war days of the automobile. Simple, economical and reliable, the little four cylinder was well respected for both its frugality and its excellent performance.
The example in this particular car, having been incredibly well maintained throughout its life, presents rather well and with turn of the key, fires into life. A surprisingly quiet and subtle engine note emanating from the exhaust. The car is reported to be a driving example with no qualms in relation to the steering and braking capabilities.

Summary

Hailing from one of the most interesting and revolutionary eras in motoring history the TA 14 is a genuinely lovely little car. A quintessential example of quality British engineering, the Alvis is in generally good standing but does lend itself well to a loving restoration. Accompanied by several original interior panels, good quality trim and an excellent running engine, FDM 544 will undoubtedly make a fine example of the model at the hands of a new loving owner.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
