The Background
The second generation CL coupe was based on the W215 S Class chassis, introduced in 1999 it was far softer edged and sleeker than the previous version it replaced, and remained in production until 2006, powered by a range of V8, and as we have here, V12 engines for effortless performance.
They were the ultimate in personal luxury with the latest Mercedes technology and loaded with every comfort and convenience feature available at the time.
The History
The current owner has owned this CL600 since 2014, in which time the MOT history shows he has driven it around 10,000 miles a year, enough to keep it ticking over and to stay on top of any issues but not enough to put too much wear on the car.
The receipts show the car has wanted for nothing, with not just regular servicing and tyres but real care has been taken to keep the car as it should be, with things like the door control module and wiring replaced in 2017 to make sure all the buttons worked correctly, and when new to him some bigger service jobs were taken care off, such as engine mounts and seals and the ABC self levelling suspension pump replaced in 2014.
In 2019 the car needed some brake lines replacing and a small repair panel which was taken care of and in 2020 the accelerator pedal and air mass sensor were changed to correct a loss of power, which solved that.
In May this year it passed a new MOT and had a full service including brake fluid, diff oil and rear suspension camber arms, so the car is ready to drive.
The Paperwork
The MOTs show the mileage to be genuine and the rare advisories that the car has been in good condition and any issues fixed straight away.
There are plenty of receipts showing the work that has been done, service and otherwise and there are some big jobs to be aware of on these cars, and they seem to have been covered in the paperwork.
The Interior
The full leather interior has held up extremely well, showing very little sign of age or use in the high quality hide covering the four seats, and the leather door cards and side trim also looks unworn. There is dark wood everywhere, across the doors, side panels, dash and centre consul and even the in the back the cover of the centre storage cubby and cup holders. This is all looks virtually new. The carpet is unworn and unmarked as is the headlining.
There are buttons aplenty, with multi function seat controls in the doors for movement, heating and cooling, and on the seats bases controls for the massage functions. In the centre stack we have a colour screen for the radio and CD - a changer is in the boot - on board computer and sat nav. Other tech includes air conditioning, electric sunroof and mirrors and frameless doors so the entire double glazed side glass can drop away.
The Exterior
This is a very original car which has been well cared for but used throughout its life, so is in very good condition with smooth panels which appear ding and corrosion free and excellent paint finish, but just a few very minor age and use blemishes can be seen including some small stone chips at the front and on the mirrors, a small scuff under the near side front bumper, some swirls in the boot paint and the V12 badge missing a part on the nearside flank.
The alloys are undamaged and the premium brand XXX tyres have good tread. At the back are quad exhaust tips which are a clue to the otherwise subtle cars true potential.
The Mechanics
The V12 is a masterpiece of engineering and even at idle sounds intoxicating. The car has seen regular limited use, which is ideal as it keeps all the parts moving and lubricated and any issues can be kept on top of , but not driven until worn out.
These models came with a very advanced high pressure hydraulic self levelling suspension system, allowing the car to stay flat while cornering but ride smoothly when cruising.
The Appeal
Sleek and good looking in an understated rather than ostentatious way, loaded with luxuries and packing a V12 under the bonnet, there's lots going for this big coupe.
As the three pointed star’s ultimate symbol of quality and status it was built as well as Mercedes could, using the highest grade materials in their range and that quality still shows.
