The Factory record card confirms dispatch of Alvis car number 13891 on the 25th July 1931, with the car being registered the previous day as OV2873. The card confirms the original engine is still present along with the original Carbodies Beetleback coachwork. OV2873 was dispatched in 1931 with black paint and green leather. The black paint is now lifted by period red wheels.
Like many cars we come across, there are large gaps in known history. There are, however, black and white photos in the history file, which appear to have been taken during the 1960s. These photos depict OV2873 undergoing a thorough body-off restoration at a private address. The continuation log book present states owner as Graham Brown of Surry, from February 1958 to May 1962. I deduce that this thorough restoration was started after this final registration stamp was obtained.
The 1990’s saw further cosmetic/ mechanical restoration, completed by marque specialist Red Triangle. Looking at the photos taken around this time and the condition of the leather both now and in those photographs, I would suggest the interior dates from the earlier 1960’s restoration and appears to be untouched since then. The interior has a nicely mellowed appearance, worn in but not tired and very usable for many more years, in my opinion. The rear passenger compartment is also trimmed, which makes a useful extra passenger space. From my experience many Beetleback 12/ 60 have had this option deleted, instead of giving over the entire space to dry, secure luggage stowage.
As we have proved the 12/ 60 Beetleback is a superb sporting tourer with a go anywhere do anything attitude, the 1645cc four-cylinder engine providing excellent torque and cruising speed.
This car along with the fully upholstered rear seat, also benefits from a full complement of weather equipment including side-screens, hood and tonneau cover.
