The Appeal
When Plymouth brought out the Valiant, they did so with a space-age atomic styling and eyes on a new market. The brilliantly Americana-named Chrysler president, Lester Lum "Tex" Colbert, elected the equally Americana-named Virgil Exner to design a compact car that could rustle off the likes of the Volkswagen Beetle and the AM Rambler. The resulting car was one of the most successful US autos of the 60s and 70s - praised as one of the most practical day-to-day cars for the true-blue American. Cue the Stars and Stripes!
Needless to say, an American 'compact' from this era is still a large car by European standards, and they're a rare sight this side of the Atlantic. This example is based in the car-friendly climate of Spain, having been restored by a Vietnam veteran in the USA until it entered the ownership of a Spanish lawyer.
