The Background

The Morris motor car was produced by Morris of England which started in 1913. Several models were produced up until the production of the Oxford Six which was a push toward the more up-market sector and was reasonably successful.
The ‘Six’ being a nod toward the six-cylinder, side valve, 2062cc engine which produced 16hp through a four-speed gearbox. The gearbox was equipped with synchromesh in 3rd & 4th while 1st and 2nd remained dog gears.
Capable of 55mph and equipped with a cocktail table for the super comfortable rear seats, this motor car really was something just a little bit different.

The History

This lovely example has not seen too many owners in its near 90-year life where it started in London at Royal Insurance Co, Ltd, purchased on the 30th April 1934 and stayed there for over a decade and subsequently each owner afterward, looked after this piece of history for a considerable amount of time.
In the 1990’s it was completely restored at considerable cost and evidently was done well due to its condition now, 25+ years on.
It is now believed that of the Oxford Six models there are now only 4 remaining from 1934 and only 15 remaining from that entire decade.

The Paperwork

The one thing we really liked to see from this example was a couple of original pieces of paperwork, firstly was the ‘Operation Manual’ which, for its age, was really nicely kept and complete and according to the owner, extremely rare.
Secondly was a very comprehensively stamped vehicle license booklet, again in nice condition and proof of a long life on the road.
A current V5 document comes with the car indicating 4 previous owners.
Several Rosettes from around 2010 are also included which evidently were received at motor shows giving evidence of the condition of the car and how it has been cared for.

The Interior

Firstly, the condition, despite being restored nearly 30 years ago, really feels authentic and original. The dark blue seats are comfortable and in nice condition with a beautifully operating central arm rest for both the passenger and driver.
All the wooden trim is in really nice condition, wearing its natural patina well.
The owner assured us that everything except the clock worked and this appeared so while out on the road. All the switches and knobs were truly in top shape and did not seem their age.
The dials and gauges, including battery charge, oil pressure, speedometer and fuel gauge are all working and in really nice condition overall.
In the rear you'll also find ash trays for each passenger along with a ‘cocktail table’ and a Pytchley sliding sun-roof for those brighter days on the road.

The Exterior

Nicely painted in Blue on Black, the paintwork is solid and tidy for its age. As you would expect it's not super glossy and shiny and we thought it's looked great as it was. It has experienced some knocks here and there on the large over arches in its time but these aren't bad and generally tell more of a story and add to character rather than detract from the overall aesthetics.
The chrome radiator grille, headlamps and all the trims are also in really nice order, and are not over polished and look in keeping with the rest of the car.
Overall, the exterior is very tidy and complete, not really needing any attention and ready to hit the shows.

The Mechanics

We were fortunate enough to be taken out in the vehicle on a hot, sunny day in Scotland and the car drove wonderfully. 16hp may not sound like much by today's standards, but for this, it is enough. It drove effortlessly and smoothly with no cracks or squeaks and changing gear was smooth and creamy too.
On startup it was faultless and once running, idled perfectly.
Under the bonnet things were good too. The overall look was clean and evidently maintained with the usual areas greased and lubricated as is so much more needed on this type of vehicle.
At some point in its life its engine has been bored out slightly to 2107cc up from 2062cc.
There was some evidence of oil about the engine but this is fairly normal and we felt it was nothing more than would be expected.
Underneath was a similar story, everything from suspension components to chassis rails looking tidy and maintained with all the usual grease points and nipples showing evidence of regular attention.

The Appeal

The first thing we noted was the looks on passer-bys faces going down the road, and by this alone it showed the appreciation for, let's be honest, this piece of history!
The way it ran and drove, comfortably navigating hills and bends meant it was still quite usable and would not be averse to regular weekend outings to shows or even just the shop.
It's not often a car of this rarity and quality comes along and is the perfect opportunity to own something so many people will appreciate, and with just a handful left, you probably won’t see another for a while!
