The Appeal

The super futuristic shape of the ID and DS range of Citroens is instantly recognisable and is world-renowned for its innovative design and super smooth ride quality. The numbers seen on our roads is certainly dwindling, so to find one in such original unrestored condition represents a rare opportunity. Stored for almost half its life, this car retains almost all of its original character and features along with a pleasing patina. This is a wonderful opportunity to recommission one of France’s most attractive cars.

The History and Paperwork

Little is known of the life of this car before the previous owner, but it is known that it has spent 25 years in dry storage and emerged around 3 years ago. It had received a colour change from silver to white sometime in the early 90s as an old MOT certificate identifies it as silver back in 1996. It has undergone some reparations including some remedial welding 3 years ago when purchased by the current owner but there is no evidence of any major structural restoration and the car possesses a lot of originality. Its age means that it is MOT-exempt but the present owner has decided to put it through a test to help instil confidence in the car’s overall condition.

The Interior

The inside of the Citroen is almost as futuristic as the outside. The dash is full of innovative designs with bright and well-spaced instruments and includes what appear to be fully working gauges and switches. The top of the dash is in good condition and without any apparent sun damage. You can’t help but be aware of the large single-spoked steering wheel and column gear-change lever.

There are indications of some wear and tear on the interior, highlighted by the door cards which are almost certainly original. The carpets appear to be quite loosely fitted and could benefit from being replaced but the seats are very plump and in more than serviceable condition. The owner has also intimated that he possesses a second set of seats with a leather covering which will also be included in the sale.

The Exterior

This little car seems to have already undergone some paintwork reparations sometime during its life as there is a previous MOT certificate that identifies the car as being silver. If this is correct, the colour change has been done very well as there is no trace of the original colour. There also seems to be evidence of some rust-proofing treatment as there are traces of the substance used on the bottom of the doors.

The bodywork is still generally good and there’s a decent depth to the paint. However, there are several micro blisters developing along with some minor damage to a couple of panel gaps. The chrome embellishments seem to be intact and all carry a level of patina that is very representative of the car’s age. There are a couple of DS badges adorning the rear pillars, but the car is formally identified as an ID.

The headlamp covers are clean and appear to be damage free as are the delightful rear indicators which are mounted high on the rear pillars. The car stands on a set of factory steel wheels which are complete with the correct, bright embellishers.

The Mechanics

The car is not in regular use, but the car started for the photo session and was moved with ease although not fully tested. All the suspension spheres are dry and appear to be free from leaks and the car sits perfectly level. There are some invoices for work and items bought over recent years, including a new steering rack, some suspension items and a new radiator. All the mechanical components seem to be functioning and any new owner would be looking at servicing and recommissioning rather than restoration as this is a complete and functioning example.

Summary

The Citroen ID and DS range were, and still are an adorable sight to behold. Beautiful swooping lines and avant-garde design features set them apart from their peers. There’s the ride quality of course which even today is unrivalled and not only simple but extremely effective. This one is a complete car that needs a level of recommissioning to make the most out of it. Naturally, you may want to go deeper and restore the car, and that could well result in producing a stunning example of considerable value.

However, this little French machine is pretty much ready to be enjoyed now with only minimal attention. It can carry its years with grace with a warmly worn interior and patina laden exterior for a long while yet.
