1971 MGB GT

Highlights

  • Engine set up and tuned by MG specialist
  • Working overdrive in 3rd and 4th gear
  • Unique metallic Bordeaux paint work
  • Comprehensive history file

The Appeal

Arguably the go to brand for quality sports cars, MG were always leading the pack when it came to stylish, dynamic automobiles, and none so more than the MG B. The perfect recipe of performance style and value meant the lightweight 2 door soft top was an absolute hit, still boasting icon status to this day.
So what would happen when the boffins at the British Motor Company handed the pen and paper over to legendary design house Pininfarina to see what they could do with the B? Perhaps some restyled bumpers or some revised headlights? No, what the Italians brought to the party was a radically revised MG B with an all new “greenhouse” sloping fastback design, aptly named, the MGB GT. The cheap, powerful, yet economical coupe proved incredibly popular with the general public and motoring press alike, and in its own right the GT achieved something of a legend status, still adored across the world all these years on.
A genuinely well presented quality example of the model, AHU 687J, a rare overdrive model, boasts unique metallic Bordeaux paint work and a wonderful, recently tuned driveline. For the avid MG enthusiast or one who is looking for an excellent highly usable classic car, this must surely be one of the best choices on the market today.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 01/01/1971
  • Accompanied by an impressive selection of MGB specialist parts invoices
  • MGB owners literature
  • Correct V5 registration document present with the vehicle
  • Paper printouts of each cylinder’s compression test reading
  • Tax and MOT exempt due to historic status

The Interior

  • Cabin recently retrimmed
  • Neat highly original interior
  • Upgraded radio system
Having recently been subject to an extensive retrim, the interior of the MG is undoubtedly a stand out point to note on the car. A sea of dark fabrics and plastics all well trimmed take provenance in the cabin of the Pininfarina styled fastback, with a brilliant feature piece in the form of the three spoke steering wheel protruding from the well sculpted dash panel.
The simplistic front seats are in remarkably clean shape, the upholstery still rich with colour and lacking in the major wear seen on so many of these cars. It is clear upon examination of the wonderful features that make up the interior of the MG that this has been a very well looked after car indeed.
At the sides we find 2 well trimmed door panels, in excellent shape with equally clean door furniture, embellished with neat chrome trim to really tie the cabin together. Up top sits a clean roof liner, notably free from the staining normally seen on cars of this era. Draping its way across the floor of the cabin, we find a plush and neat, fitted carpet, flowing right the way through to the boot which holds the full size Rostyle spare wheel.
Front and centre sits the aforementioned dash piece, still vibrant in its colour and lacking in sun damage or cracks to the plastics, this is yet just another example of the quality to which this excellent example has been upheld throughout its lifetime. Focusing below this, a simple and nonclustered centre control panel sits proudly, well appointed with an upgraded radio system.

The Exterior

  • Impeccable Bordeaux red metallic paintwork
  • Minilite wheels
  • Great high quality chrome
One major job performed in the more recent history of this car came in the form of the bodywork. A full respray was on the cards whilst the MG was at the hands of a previous owner, but what colour would really make this a standout car? Bordeaux red of course. A simply exquisite deep red metallic, the MG’s new paintwork really does have a marvellous mile deep quality to it, and undoubtedly makes the car stand out just that little bit further from an aesthetic perspective.
A perfect compliment to that beautiful 70s Pininfarina styling, the lashings of chrome trim are all in good standing. Presenting with a wonderful shine, the front and rear bumpers, along with the rather iconic front grille piece and bodywork embellishments look excellent alongside that deep red metallic paintwork.
The car sits on four excellent upgraded Minilite alloy wheels, with the previously mentioned spare Rostyle wheel stowed in the boot. At present the wheels are in incredibly clean condition and help set the car off even more from an aesthetic perspective.

The Mechanics

  • Engine recently tuned by MG specialist
  • Great clean driveline and running gear
  • Excellent performer on the road
A true staple of British automobilia, and an unquestionable legend in the world of engines, the simply remarkable 1798cc B series engine needs no introduction. Simple, economical and most importantly, a great performer, the mighty four cylinder found its way into the heart of nearly all MGB GTs.
The example found in this particular car, benefits not only from regular and thorough maintenance, but from a recent refresh and tune up at the hands of an independent MG specialist, and as such it now packs that extra bit of punch whilst on the road. The engine itself is in great order as reported during the aforementioned tune up, with a full compression test being undertaken at the same time, with all four cylinders providing a good reading (photos of each cylinder and its reading accompany the car in its history file)
The current owner of the MG reports a wonderful rewarding drive from the little fastback, with plenty of power on tap at the request of the driver and their right foot, along with good brakes and brilliant dynamic handling. Prospective buyers will also be interested to note that this particular GT is an overdrive car and at present the overdrive is reported to be functioning as intended.

Summary

The MGB GT has always been a popular car, there’s no question about that. Right from its introduction all those decades ago, the little GT has won the hearts of many car enthusiasts and lovers of truly excellent drivers cars. Cut forward to present day and the GTs have garnered all new levels of appreciation among classic car enthusiasts.
With good examples being snapped up in an instant, cars like AHU 687J present a rare and exciting opportunity for those looking to break into the market or add to a pre existing collection. With marvellous metallic paintwork, a retrimmed interior and a recently tuned driveline, this MG is ready to be enjoyed right from the first moment of ownership.
