Background

Like bangers ‘n’ mash, pulled IPA, mowing the lawn or washing the car on a sunny Sunday, the MGB was a staple of everyday life in Britain in the second half of the 20th Century.
As Ray Charles bellowed out ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ from the top of the charts in June, 1962, the MGB rolled into showrooms up and down the UK. The British classic went on to become one of the UK’s best-selling and most loved sports cars, bringing stylish design, an exciting drive and everyday usability to hundreds of thousands of drivers who were glad to switch from their socially-sensible Zodiac’s, Cortina’s and Zephyr’s to something that put a skip in their step and delivered considerably more smiles-per-gallon – and not just on Sundays.
Because of its popularity – more than half a million were built and sold globally – many MGBs remain on the road today, which makes it one of the more affordable classics and an ideal introduction to the lifestyle.
The MGB began life as a roadster, with a simple manual soft-top that could be lowered just as fast as you could sing ‘Summer Holiday’, before a hardtop coupe version was added in 1965, called the MGB GT.
The last MGB convertible rolled off the production line at the Abingdon factory on the 22nd of October 1980 and it ended an era of sports car motoring, not only of the MGB but also of MG sports cars in general.
While of course there were mechanical and cosmetic improvements made to the MGB during its life, throughout its 18 years of continuous production, the basic body shape remained the same.

The History

On September 1st, 1971 – as Rod Stewart was gravelling out ‘Maggie May’ at the top of the British charts – NDY 458K received its first UK registration. During the intervening half century, the car has been enjoyed by no less than 10 former keepers, the current and 11th of which acquired the car in late September, 2021.
The car is currently SORNed and a rummage through online MoT records indicates a PASS for the last three tests. The last MoT expired in August, 2015, however the car has been dry-stored for the past six years and only removed from the garage for brief excursions around the property of the previous owner to keep the mechanicals active and lubricated.
Interestingly, the car has travelled just 362 miles in the eight years since undertaking its last MoT in 2014.
The car is part of an evolving collection and is offered for sale as space is needed to accommodate an imminent but exciting new arrival.

The Paperwork

Accompanying the sale will be the V5C, two sets of keys and a small file of past paperwork which details spares acquired and maintenance undertaken in recent years.

The Interior

While not in concours condition, the interior of this automotive gem presents in very good condition, to the extent that the writer frequently had to remind himself that this is a fifty year old British classic.
The MGB’s original interior reflects its ‘lovingly used’ condition and promises to be a delightful place in which to spend some immersive road time. Beneath the tidy carpets, the floorpan is said by the owner to be in very good condition. The dashboard and door cards present remarkably well for its age, as does the overall condition of the furniture and hood interior.
It is quite evident that since the refurbishment at some unknown point in its past, the car has been garaged away from the elements when not in use, such is the high quality of presentation by the car.

The Exterior

Along with the smart and tidy interior, the car’s exterior is highly presentable. The paintwork gleams to a high standard and all the brightwork shines as intended. The front and rear lights are clear of the usual age-related fog and all electrics are said to be in working order.
The bodywork is in exceptional condition throughout and the tidy boot houses the fifth, wire-spoked wheel as a spare. Both undersides of the boot lid and bonnet are in excellent condition.
A cursory glance down each flank of the car shows no evidence of damage and the front number plate, bumper and valance – for all their vulnerability – remain in remarkably good condition. 
The front, rear and side sills of the car are blemish-free, as are each of the door under-sills. The condition of the car highlights the love and care afforded the car over the years.
With most yings come some yangs…but don’t fret - there are very few on this car. There is a chip to bodywork near the driver’s door handle and on the trailing edge at the centre of the bonnet and another below the driver’s door on the supporting crossbeam. In addition there a few minor abrasions to the paintwork that, to be fair, any professional body shop worth their salt would remedy in a jiffy. All are pictured in the accompanying gallery.

The Mechanics

At the photo location, the car started at the first of each ask and settled into an appreciative burble. The gearbox connected smoothly and the clutch engaged with no drama, requiring a just gentle rev to get underway.
The custodian reports the car to be very good mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective engineers intended over fifty years ago. 

The engine bay is very tidy and clean and, like the immediately visible parts of this MGB Roadster, the underside of the car present in good order with the usual degree of natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age and mileage.

The Appeal

At classic car shows up and down the country, you can almost guarantee that there will be an MGB present…and there are many good reasons for that. Aside from being many owner’s pride and joy, the cars are often affordable, parts are widely available and inexpensive, servicing is straightforward and the driving experience is well judged for a car intended to offer populist appeal.
In NDY 458K, we have a very healthy example of MGB as the model began to mature during its eighteen years of production life. It presents is very good condition inside, outside and under and its new keeper will have a hard act to follow in maintaining the condition of this car.
Besides, there are a myriad of MG clubs and associations across the UK, the members of which are as helpful and as knowledgeable as they come and would be only too pleased to be approached if needed.
