The Appeal
60s and 70s surfers loved Volvo’s Amazon estate because it could double as holdall and sleepover. That seems to have been the inspiration for the P1800ES because it began as an idea for a beach car. Thankfully, buyers saw its broader appeal and this clever, proto-sporting estate found 8,000 buyers over two years.
Today, it is one of Volvo’s most interesting leftfield offerings, but very rare in the RHD of this 1971 example. It also has the desirable manual overdrive gearbox. Finished in mid metallic blue with a retrimmed black leather cabin, it is a very tidy and clearly cherished example.
The vendor tells us that he bought it in 2022 from a reputable dealer in Belgium. Since then he has maintained the car himself. It is fitted with a new cylinder head gasket and hardened valve seats, so it will run on unleaded. The car benefits from new brake callipers and pads and electronic ignition.
It is rare to find a P1800ES and even rarer in this specification. One not to miss, particularly if your classic car trips involve plenty of luggage.
The vendor says:
“Serviced the car by myself, lovely car to drive, I love the light blue paintwork, with it being an estate car, plenty of room inside.”
