The Appeal

With its iconic silhouette and fantastic reputation, the 1974MY "G" 911 is a very desirable and much sought after classic sports car. Benefitting from a 2.7-litre flat-six delivering a hearty 150hp to the rear wheels, it offers an engaging and rapturous driving experience which is quite the antithesis of many modern sports cars. This is a car that you really have to drive - there are no aids or assists here, it’s just you, the machine and limits of mechanical grip and physics.
Finished in bold Peru Red, this handsome example started life in the United States, before being imported to the UK in 2015. Clearly having been restored to a good standard at some point, this delightful machine is now ready to find a new owner. As a well-kept and excellently presented example of one of the most important sports cars ever made, we expect there will be no shortage of people wanting to park this beauty on their driveway…

The Interior

The cabin of this 911 has clearly been treated to some refurbishment in the recent past, as it presents in very good order, with very little wear considering it’s nearly 50 years old.
The door cards, dashboard top and seats are finished with handsome black leatherette, which looks to have been refinished fairly recently as it presents in excellent condition, with no significant wear, tears or sagging we could identify. 
Complementing this well, black carpets and floor mats adorn the cabin and show very well, with no threading or staining apparent. Meanwhile, the headlining is a light coloured, perforated vinyl and we didn’t see any evidence of damage or sagging. There’s a little staining in a few places, but it is still eminently usable. The vinyl sun visors do show a little ‘bagging’ – usually this is caused by summer heat – but are still very usable.
Looking at the switchgear and trim, everything appears to be in fine fettle. There’s a pleasing light patina to the controls and instruments, with a little spidering / cracking to the top of the gear knob, but everything else being in very good condition.
Under the bonnet there’s a useful luggage storage area, neatly trimmed in dark grey carpet. There’s a strut brace fitted across the front suspension here, offering tighter, more feelsome control. Also present is a compressor, tool roll and a spacesaver spare wheel.

The Exterior

Resplendent in the factory hue of ‘Peru Red’, this 911 looks very smart indeed. The paint naturally has a few minor blemishes and some stone chips, but nothing that would dissuade us from the car. 
The bodywork itself is very neat and tidy, with smooth curves and well-gapped panels, showing no evidence of notable corrosion or damage. Clearly, this lovely old sports car has been cherished by its owner.
All of the trim and badging appears to be present and correct, with the brightwork exhibiting a fine sheen, with some light weathering. New rear indicator lenses have been fitted, while the glass elements and the front lenses all look to be free from cracks and chips.
Wheels are the period-correct 15-inch, forged Fuchs items. Presented in good overall condition, they have been finished with satin black centres and polished lips, which contrasts nicely with the paintwork. The wheels are shod with a matched set of Treva Touring tyres that appear to have decent tread depth.
Underneath, all appears to be well, with the floors and sills looking to be straight and clean, with no signs of damage we could discern. There is a soupçon of surface corrosion to some of the drivetrain components, but this is no more than you’d expect from any car that gets used on the road.

The Mechanics

The combination of an air-cooled flat-six, rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission is revered by driving enthusiasts the world over. And rightly so, it’s a charismatic and engaging composition – one that Porsche perfected in the 911.
Looking at the engine itself, it is presented in very clean and neat fashion, obviously having been given much attention over the years. From the factory this unit delivered 150hp, more than enough to push this light sports car along at a fair old lick.
In November 2022 the vendor had the alternator rebuilt, otherwise they report no issues whatsoever with the car. Apparently the car drives just as it should, with no mechanical problems or faults to declare.

Summary

Beloved of driving enthusiasts everywhere, air-cooled 911s are on the wish-list of most petrolheads. And this is a very handsome, well-kept example, presented in a fine specification. Whoever the new owner is, we’re certain they’re going to get many years of enjoyment from this stone-cold classic…
