The Appeal
Mercedes-Benz got a lot right with the R107 SL. With timeless styling, a range of engine options to suit every customer and the ability to convert into a stylish coupé or open top roadster, they're the perfect usable classic. It’s no wonder then that the R107 remained in production for so long, with some claiming it to be Mercedes-Benz’s greatest car.
We’re delighted to offer this cherished 1987 300SL that benefits from a great deal of maintenance in recent years. The vendor informs us that the engine was replaced with the straight-six from an R129 SL in 2022. This engine was inspected before being fitting and had covered circa 90.000 miles at that time. Complete with both its hard top and soft top roofs, this looks a very good example that’s ready to be enjoyed.

The Interior
- Blue MB Tex upholstery with cloth inserts which present well
- Walnut veneers in good order, with some slight fading
- Equipped with a more modern CD stereo system
- We noted a few cracks in the vinyl dashboard
- The VDO instrumentation looks smart and we understand that it works correctly
- VDO outside temperature gauge mounted between the vents
- So far as we could see, the carpeting is in quite good order
- The inside of the boot presents well
The Exterior
- Alpine White pearlescent paintwork
- Blue soft-top roof in good order with only one small blemish and some slight discolouration
- The vendor informs us that the hard top roof is present also
- We noticed some slight damage to the nearside tail light, as well as to the front numberplate
- The bodywork appears very smart indeed
- We’re informed that a new rear valance, chrome bumper and fog lamp lenses have been fitted at a cost of around £1,000
- There are a few chips, small scratches and general blemishes, but nothing especially noticeable
- There’s a little light pitting to some of the chrome, but it looks to be in very good condition overall
- The wheels appear in really nice condition, although the tyres exhibit some perishing to the sidewalls

Summary
