1989 Land Rover Defender 90

Highlights

  • Recent fresh respray in 'Miami blue'
  • Thousands spent on maintenance and upgrades
  • Fitted with INSA Turbo Special Track mud tyres
  • Copious new and uprated parts recently fitted

The Appeal

If you're looking for a characterful classic that can be enjoyed all year round, this Land Rover would certainly fit the bill. It's a late Ninety, sold shortly before the introduction of the Defender name. You'll note that its appearance is quite unique, having been refinished in the eye-catching Miami Blue with a contrasting white roof, wheels, and chassis.

The Land Rover looks to be in good condition for its age, with straight, smart bodywork, a solid-looking chassis and a well-preserved interior. It's had a wealth of new and uprated parts fitted, including Bilstein dampers, a lift kit, winch, uprated front bumper, BSB auto parts lights, CB radio and much more. Mechanically, we find it has recently received a new Borg & Beck three-piece clutch kit, new master/slave cylinder, new brake pipes, new pop shaft joints, a new alternator belt and a replacement head gasket.

The vendor informs us that it's in working order and has proved a good driver throughout their ownership: "Gear stick and clutch are both free moving, and all gears engage, but there is resistance to much movement in gear" so will need to be towed.

"The MOT has expired so the Land Rover will need to be collected on a Transporter/Trailer. The vehicle pulls away with a little hesitancy which will require investigation

The vendor says:

"I am reluctantly looking to sell my beloved Land Rover Ninety due to moving to France to pursue my career in super-yachting.

Like any Land Rover, she’s not a speed machine. Steering and braking are both good but expect to remain in the slow lane on motorways. But to make up for what she lacks in speed, you gain in Land Rover waves and looks of approval on your travels.

Her eye catching colour and tractor tyres gain her looks of approval everywhere you go. She has a real personality.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK market right-hand drive example
  • 83,853 miles indicated
  • MOT expired on 30th December 2024 so it will have to be collected on a Transporter/Trailer
  • Limited service history available as the car was bought with minimal documents
  • Bought from a reputable auction house
  • Reluctantly selling as the vendor is relocating to France
  • Well-loved and looked after, with thousands spent on it during current ownership

The Condition

  • The Land Rover looks in very good overall condition, benefitting from a recent respray
  • Straight-looking alloy bodywork
  • The chassis has been treated with a white underseal - quite unusual to see and really suits the look of this car
  • Small hole in the passenger footwell
  • General Grabber tyres - 285/75R16 INSA Turbo Special Track mud tyres
  • Matching (slightly smaller) spare wheel mounted on swing away cradle
  • Knob for the transfer box is missing
  • Mismatched front seats with some tearing
  • Centre cubby box
  • Cup holders
  • CB radio

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre 19J four-cylinder turbodiesel
  • Five-speed manual gearbox with low-range and four-wheel-drive
  • New Borg & Beck three-piece clutch kit
  • New master and slave cylinder
  • New brake pipes
  • New pop shaft joints
  • New alternator belt
  • New head gasket
  • Reportedly starts, idles and revs as it should
  • Smokes slightly from a cold start - not unusual for a diesel of this era
  • Only advisory on last MOT was a corroded exhaust; new one fitted from the centre backwards
  • Lift kit with Bilstein dampers
  • Gearbox is functioning correctly in all gears but the gear change is stiff when pulling out of gear and the vehicle pulls away with a little hesitancy
  • Steering and braking are both said to be in good working order

We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own  full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
